Series in Review
The
Columbia Fireflies final series of 2017 started on the right foot, as the
Fireflies took a 4-2 win over Rome to move one game over .500 for the season.
Cola starter Gabriel Llanes finished his season on a high-note, taking a
shutout into the 6th and allowing just one run for the win. Ryder
Ryan, Matt Pobereyko, and Matt Blackham combined for 5 strikeouts in relief of
Llanes, with just the one unearned run allowed. Gene Cone led the way with the
two hits but it was a bases clearing double from Brandon Brosher in the 6th
that provided the difference on the scoreboard.

Columbia
was outplayed by almost every in a 10-0 loss during game two of the series. In
addition to the blowout score, Rome outhit Columbia 15-to-7 and the Fireflies
committed 4 errors in the loss. Cola starter Jose Carlos Medina did a good job
missing bats – see a full pitch log below – but he also allowed plenty of hard
contact, as Rome connected on 11 hits, including 3 doubles and a triple against
him. Gene Cone had another multi-hit game for Columbia, but all seven Cola hits
were scattered singles, and the Fireflies worked just one walk.

With
a final score of 16-4, the Fireflies took a second straight blowout loss in
game three. Marty Anderson struggled with command in the 2nd, so he
was replaced down 3-0 with the bases loaded and all 3 runs came around to
score. Taylor Henry took the brunt of the next scoring outburst, as he was
charged with 7 runs in less than 2 innings of work. The left side of the Cola
infield (Reed Gamache and Oliver Pascual) led the way with two hits apiece,
while Quinn Brodey and Dan Rizzie each connected on a double for Columbia.

The
Fireflies got a winnable outing from Justin Brantley in the season finale, but
the offense never really got anything going in a 4-2 loss. The Cola lineup was
slow to get going and struck out 12 times, with half of those coming over the
first 3 innings. Luis Carpio led the way offensively with 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, and
J.J. Franco, Dan Rizzie, and Jay Jabs contributed doubles for Columbia.
