Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones losing season reached a new low Monday night against
Tri-City, as they dropped their tenth straight on a walkoff grand slam and then
nearly came to blows with the Valley Cats as the two teams left the field. It
was a franchise-record setting tenth straight loss, and a season’s worth of
frustration boiled over for Brooklyn when one of the Cats players appeared to
be clapping in a taunting manner at the BK reliever who had allowed the grand
slam. Fortunately, things didn’t get out of control and these two squads won’t
play each other again in 2017, so there’s no chance this near dustup leads to
any future problems on the field (at least not in 2017).
Tri-City
jumped ahead 1-0 on a Colton Shaver homer in the 2nd.
Jose Maria connected on
Brooklyn’s first hit of the game in the 2nd, and Dylan Snypes singled in the 3rd.
Brooklyn
then jumped ahead with a big four-run 4th. Scott Manea started the
inning with a double, one of three for Brooklyn in the frame. Carl Stajduhar
doubled him home, and then Staj scored on a Walter Rasquin double. Guillermo Granadillo
singled between the Staj and Rasquin doubles, and then Quinn Brodey singled
after the Rasquin double, which brought him home to make it 4-1.
Michael Papierski shaved a run off
the BK lead with a solo blast in the 4th. Debora had allowed just
two homers all season before this game, and just eight homers in 227.2 IP as a
pro, so it was unusual for him allow two to Tri-City Monday. Debora was
otherwise very sharp, allowing just three base runners over his five innings,
and he left with his pitch count at just 71.
Like
several other Brooklyn players, Jose Maria is finally putting together a nice
little hot streak here at the end of the season. He started the 6th
inning with a solo shot for his fourth homer of the year to make this a 5-2
game. Maria is now 8-22 over his last six games, with two doubles and two
homers during that span, and most of his hot streak airing on MiLB.tv.
Granadillo singled and stole second later in the frame.
Gregorix
Estevez took over for Debora in the bottom of the 6th and quickly
gave that run right back. He walked the first two batters of the frame, so he
was lucky to escape with just one run allowed.
The
Cats got to Estevez again in the 7th and this time they were able to
tie things up. J.J. Matijevic did the damage with a two-run shot to right
field, and Estevez was gone shortly after he scored.
Trey
Cobb took over for Estevez and retired the final two batters of the frame to
maintain the status quo.
The
Cyclones scratched out a run in the 8th to jump back in front,
although they had a chance to blow this game open. There were two errors, a
walk, and an RBI single, yet the Cyclones were only able to scratch out one
run.
Cobb
stayed out for the 8th and threw a perfect frame – it was the first
time Tri-City had gone down in order since the 1st inning.
Joe
Napolitano was given the save opportunity in the 9th, and he
might’ve gotten it too if not for an E5 with two outs. The E5 allowed the tying
run to score and the game snowballed after that. Joey Naps walked Papierski to
load the bases and Shaver followed with his second bomb of the game.
The
view is limited, but you can see that one Tri-City player appears to be
intentionally provoking Brooklyn, and that’s what I think led to the benches
clearing. I’m guessing neither side showed much sportsmanship in that moment,
but Tri-City has no excuse for taunting Brooklyn as they walked off the field
with their tenth straight loss. There’s talent on the roster, but the Cyclones
have one of the worst records in all of pro baseball right now and you just won
on a walkoff grand slam, what the F are you taunting for? I get that trash
talking happens during the game, but you have to be a certain kind of jerk to
prefer taunting the other team to celebrating a win at home plate with your own
team.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones have a little over two weeks left in their season and no
chance at the playoffs. There will be three more MiLB.tv games available,
although those will be spread out and all in Staten Island, so it won’t be
great coverage. Hopefully they’ll put an end to this losing streak before the
season is over.
