Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies took a second straight 2-1 loss to the Portland Sea
Dogs in game one Friday evening, as they were unable to overcome two 1st
inning runs. Ponies starter Mickey Jannis allowed those two runs on three hits
in the 1st inning and then nothing else after that. Jannis retired
the final 17 Portland batters in a row, which left the door wide open for a
Bingo comeback, but Sea Dogs starter (and one-time Mets draft pick) Teddy
Stankiewicz was just as effective. Stankiewicz struck out five and took a
shutout into the 6th, but finished two outs shy of the complete game
win.
Three
of the first four Ponies batters connected on hits against Jannis in the 1st,
and the Sea Dogs came a homerun shy of a team cycle during the stretch: Danny
Mars tripled, Chad De La Guerra doubled Mars home, and then Jeremy Barfield
singled De La Guerra home with the ‘game-winning RBI’ (they used to keep track
of that stat).
After the initial problems, Jannis
settled in for another great outing. He’s been very reliable for Binghamton
this year, so he should at least be going to Vegas next year, and could
actually work his way into some time with the Mets in 2018-19.
The
Ponies were slow to get anything going against Stankiewicz. Patrick Biondi
connected on the first Binghamton hit with two outs in the 3rd.
Biondi stole second but nothing came of it. Kevin Kaczmarski led off the 4th
with a single of his own, but he was caught stealing in the frame. Kevin Taylor
singled with one out in the 5th and stayed there the rest of the
inning.
Binghamton
finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 6th thanks to the
speed of Patrick Biondi. Biondi led off the frame with a triple to RF and came
home on a groundout to make this a 2-1 game.
Peter
Alonso connected on his first Double-A hit against Stankiewicz in the 7th,
and then Kevin Taylor coaxed a walk, so Portland brought in reliever Ty Buttrey
to finish the game. Buttrey allowed some loud contact, but both balls in play
led to outs, which put an end to game one.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies give the ball to P.J. Conlon for his first start in three
weeks in game two.
