Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies completed a double-header sweep of the Portland Sea
Dogs without once using their bullpen Friday night. Ricky Knapp struck out nine
during a seven-inning complete game for the 4-1 win in game one, and then
Marcos Molina struck out six in a complete game win during the nightcap to
complete the sweep. The Ponies offense was supported by another big 4th
inning, which featured another two-run homerun, with David Thompson going yard
for Binghamton in the nightcap after Kevin Kaczmarski hit one out earlier.
Molina
was sharp in the nightcap, but he had trouble avoiding base runners. They only
piled up in the 7th, but his only clean frame was the 4th.
The Ponies turned a double play behind him in the 2nd and 6th
innings. Portland’s biggest threat before the 7th came when Cole
Sturgeon connected on a one-out triple in the 5th. Fortunately for
Binghamton, Molina responded to that threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
Just
like in game one, the Ponies only had one single (this one from Luis Guillorme)
and a pair of base runners over the first three innings.
Kevin
Taylor sparked the Ponies 4th inning rally with a leadoff single. Matt
Oberste brought him around from first base with a double to left field. David
Thompson followed with a ‘rally-killer’ to make it 3-0. Tomas Nido and Gustavo
Nunez added singles later in the frame, but then Portland made a pitching
change and Trevor Kelley shut the door on the 4th.
The
only Rumble Ponies batter not to bat in the 4th, Kevin Kaczmarski,
led off the 5th with a single to center field. Taylor singled Kacz
to second base, and then they both advanced a base on a groundout. Nido knocked
them both in with two outs in the frame to make this a 5-0 game.
After
that, it was just a matter of whether Molina could wrap things up. He allowed
back-to-back singles in the 7th, which got the Binghamton pen stirring,
but he bounced back to retire the next three in a row and clinch the win. He finished
the game with a strikeout of Deiner Lopez on his 94th pitch.
Looking
ahead, these two teams are scheduled to play another double-header Saturday,
with Mickey Jannis expected to pitch for Binghamton in the opener.
