Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones are in the midst of a long losing streak that’s coming during
a long season filled with a lot of losses. 2017 has not been kind to the
Cyclones, and games like Saturday night are exactly why they now have a 15-41
record. They outhit their opponents 10-to-7, yet scored just one run as they finished
2-13 with runners in scoring position. They weren’t terrible on the other side
of the ball, but the mistakes they made opened the door for the final three
Tri-City runs.
Walter
Rasquin doubled for Brooklyn with one out in the 1st, but he was
caught stealing third base before the next AB ended.
Bryan
De La Cruz greeted Luis De Los Santos with a solo blast in the bottom of the 1st
to make this a 1-0 game. De Los Santos appeared to settle in nice after that,
as he retired eight of the next nine batters he faced, but then things got ugly
in the 3rd.
Before
that happened, Brooklyn missed a chance to even things up in the 2nd.
Jeremy Vasquez and Scott Manea singled in the frame, and a passed ball had them
both in scoring position with just one out, but the Cyclones couldn’t get
either runner home. Also shown below is Dylan Snypes single from the 3rd.
With
two outs in the bottom of the 3rd, J.J. Matijevic extended the
inning with a ground-rule double to LF. After that, De Los Santos forgot how to
throw strikes and he walked three of the next four batters, and the other
batter connected on a two run single to make this a 3-0 game. While there were
no defensive miscues in the frame, a Monday Morning QB would say that De Los
Santos should’ve had a quicker hook, and that he probably shouldn’t be in the
starters role to begin with.
Joe
Napolitano took over for De Los Santos in the 3rd and finished the
frame with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded. He stayed out for two more
scoreless innings and his performance was one of the bright spots for Brooklyn
in this game.
Speedy
Guillermo Granadillo led off the 5th with a bunt single for his
first NYPL hit. The 20-year old center fielder is listed at 5’11 and is playing
in his first season stateside after spending just one year in the DSL. He hit
.301/.379/.397 over 42 games with the GCL Mets earlier this year, connecting on
eight doubles, two triples, one homer, and finishing with 17 stolen bases and a
23 K: 16 BB ratio.
Vasquez
walked leading off the 6th inning, advanced to second on a wild
pitch, moved up to third on a groundout, and then came around to score on Manea’s
second hit of the game. Also shown below is Snypes second hit of the game.
Stephen
Villines came out of the Cyclones pen for the 6th and started his
night with a strikeout as part of a 1-2-3 frame. He stayed in and retired the
first batter of the 7th, but then a grounder to second turned into a
multi-base error, which opened the door for Tri-City’s final run. Villines
bounced back from allowing the unearned run to retire the final two batters he
faced on a pop out and strikeout.
Conner
O’Neil worked a scoreless frame in the 8th to finish the pitching
side of things for Brooklyn.
However,
the Cyclones still had a few hits left in their bats at the end. Jeremy Vasquez
singled in the 8th, although he was thrown out trying to stretch his
hit into a double. Manea did double leading off the 9th, and he went
to third on a Guillermo Granadillo single two batters later, but then that
threat and the game ended on a double play.
Looking
ahead, the Cyclones have two more in Tri-City this week and four more games
total on MiLB.tv this season. Jose Geraldo will look to match his early success
with Brooklyn in game two, which starts Sunday evening at 5 PM.
