Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies overcame some early stumbles from Ricky Knapp to take
the opener with Erie 5-4 in extra innings Monday night. The two teams battled
for control early but were still in a 4-4 deadlock after seven innings. That
tie stretched into the 12th, when Binghamton finally scratched out
the winning run. The Ponies pen was great over five scoreless in this one, but
the star was L.J. Mazzilli, who finished a triple shy of the cycle in a
four-hit effort.
The
Ponies struck first with a run in the 1st. Mazzilli and Matt Oberste
worked walks to start the frame and David Thompson eventually singled home Mazz
for the 1-0 lead.
After
a quick 1st, Knapp struggled with command as Erie jumped ahead in
the 2nd. Gabriel Quintana provided the big hit for Erie in the
frame, driving in both runs with a two-out single to left field.
Mazzilli
tied things up with one swing of the bat leading off the 3rd.
Thompson added his second hit of the game later in the frame.
The
tie did not last long, however, as big Steven Moya launched a solo blast to put
Erie back on top leading off the 4th. The Sea Wolves extended their
lead to 4-2 when Dawel Lugo connected on a two-out RBI double in the 5th.
Mazzilli’s
big night continued with a leadoff single in the 5th, and the Ponies
loaded the bases in the frame, but they wasted the opportunity to cut into
Erie’s lead.
They
nearly wasted another opportunity in the 6th, as Kevin Kaczmarski
started the frame with a triple but still stood at third two outs later.
Fortunately for Binghamton, Mazzilli was due up again and he stroked an RBI
double to left field to make this a 4-3 game.
Peter
Alonso’s smooth transition to Double-A continued when he led off the 7th
with a double, which led to the game-tying run for Binghamton. Alonso advanced
to third base on a groundout and then Tomas Nido singled him home to make it
4-4. The Ponies had another bases loaded opportunity in the frame, but a double
play grounder cut the rally short.
Corey
Taylor took over for Knapp in the 8th and he contributed two
scoreless innings from the Ponies pen.
Taylor
yielded to Drew Smith for the 10th and Smith struck out three of
seven batters faced over two scoreless frames.
The
Rumble Ponies managed just two singles between the 8th and 11th
innings, but they did come back-to-back in the 10th. Unfortunately,
Gustavo Nunez was caught trying to steal second base before Champ Stuart
connected on his, so nothing came of the “outburst.”
Cory
Burns took over for Binghamton in the 12th and stranded two for a
scoreless frame. He was made the winner when Binghamton walked off in the
bottom half of the 12th.
The
bottom of the 12th started innocently enough, as the first two
Ponies batters were set down ahead of the seven-hitter. The seven-hole hitter
for Binghamton was Kevin Kaczmarski on this night, and he sparked the winning
rally with a single through the right side. Two walks later, the Ponies had the
bases loaded for the man of the night, L.J. Mazzilli – it would have to come down to him, and you would’ve known that had you
been counting his hits throughout this recap. Mazzilli lined the walkoff single
into center field to cap his big night and a Ponies comeback.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will be in town for awhile, as they host Erie for three more,
have four scheduled at home against Hartford next week, and then the first two games
of the EL Division Championship Series will take place in Binghamton.
