Recapish
After
sweeping through Augusta this past week, the Columbia Fireflies returned home
on the heels of a three-game winning streak Friday but then dropped their
opener with Rome 6-3. Due to a double-header, it was the first of five these
two teams will play in a series that wraps around the weekend and concludes on
Eclipse Monday. Marty Anderson made his fourth start since joining the
Fireflies and it was another mixed performance for him. He allowed four runs on
a pair of homers in Rome’s big 4th, which was the difference in this
game, but he allowed just one run over his other four innings of work, and he
actually did a good job missing bats between those homers in the 4th.
Anderson
walked the first batter of the game and Rome got him home before an out was recorded.
He bounced back with a strikeout and pop out induced before escaping the 1st
inning jam. The Cola defense helped Anderson toss a scoreless 2nd
inning, and then he struck out a pair during his only perfect frame in the 3rd.
The
Cola bats started 0-7 before Brandon Brosher came to the plate and launched his
11th homer of the year to tie things up at one. Unsurprisingly,
Brosher’s been showing off nice power and been on a tear since he started
getting more regular playing time in the second half. He may never be that
great behind the plate, but his bat has the power to play anywhere if he can
make enough contact. To that end, he has a .900+ OPS over his last 13 starts,
but a ~44% K-rate, which is a bit too extreme.
Rome’s
Leudys Baez did not like that Columbia had tied things up in the 3rd,
so he wasted little time launching a homer in the 4th to put the
Braves back on top. Jordan Rodgers connected on a two out, three-run homer
later in the frame, and that was the difference maker in this game. Anderson
worked around a pair of base runners in the 5th for a scoreless
frame, and then left trailing 4-1.
Taylor
Henry took over for Anderson in the 6th and threw a scoreless frame.
Brosher
didn’t like the call on a third strike in the 6th and home plate ump
Mark Bass felt his reactions were bad enough to warrant a quick ejection.
Andres Gimenez reached on an infield single later in the frame for the
Fireflies second hit of the game.
Henry
stayed in for the 7th and collected his second strikeout, but he also
allowed a leadoff double to Cristian Pache, and the Braves were able to get him
around to make this a 6-1 game.
Columbia
finally broke through again in the bottom of the 7th, when Rome dipped into their pen. J.J. Franco started the inning with a double and
Ian Strom eventually got him home on a sac fly. Reed Gamache added a single later in
the frame.
Ryder
Ryan took over for Columbia in the 8th and had arguably his best
outing since coming over in the Jay Bruce trade. He struck out three and induced
three groundouts to shortstop over two perfect innings of work. Natanael Ramos was
shook up on a foul ball right after Ryan took over, so Dan Rizzie had to finish
the game at catcher for Columbia – Cola was down to just one catcher after
starting the game with three.
The
Fireflies had one last run in their bats in this one. Gimenez started the 8th
with a walk, went to second on a J.J. Franco single, and then scored on an E4.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies welcome Gabriel Llanes off the DL for the first of two
games that these teams will play Saturday evening, and then are expected to hand
the ball off to Justin Brantley for the nightcap.
