Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s dropped their finale in Fresno Friday night, blowing a 2-1 lead
late and a chance for a road sweep of one of the top teams in the PCL. Mitch
Atkins turned in another strong performance for Las Vegas, allowing just one
run on two hits over six innings, but he left trailing 1-0, and the 51s pen
couldn’t match his success. The 51s scratched out just five hits and didn’t get
on the scoreboard until the 8th, when they temporarily took the
lead.
Fresno
jumped ahead 1-0 early, when Drew Ferguson doubled home a run with two outs in
the 2nd. That double was the only hit Atkins allowed until there
were two outs in the 6th, but he issued four walks, which elevated
his pitch count and knocked him out early.
Meanwhile,
not only did Atkins leave down 1-0, he left with his teammates being no-hit in
the PCL (!). Travis Snider finally broke up the no-no bid when he connected on
a two out single against Rogelio Armenteros in the 7th, becoming
just the third 51s base runner of the evening against the Cuba native.
With
the no-no bid gone, Fresno dipped into its bullpen for the 8th and
the 51s bats rejoiced. Jayce Boyd greeted Dean Deetz with his eighth homer of
the season, which tied the game at one. Xorge Carrillo connected on a single
two batters later and was then able to score from first base on an RBI double
from Phillip Evans to put Las Vegas up 2-1.
Logan
Taylor took over for Atkins in the 7th and worked a perfect inning.
He stayed out for the 8th and retired the first batter of the frame,
but then the next two reached on a single and a walk, so Manager Pedro Lopez
went to his bullpen with some tough lefties due up. Big lefty Alberto Baldonado
came in and struck out A.J. Reed for a big second out. Unfortunately, Preston
Tucker followed with an RBI single to tie things up at two before Baldonado
could close out the frame.
Baldonado
stayed out for the 9th and retired the first batter of the inning,
but then the next three Fresno batters connected on hits for a walkoff win.
Looking
ahead, the 51s head home for a week of games against Salt Lake and Reno. They
have one more road trip this year, which starts 8/28 in Sacramento and lasts
four games.
