Recapish
Although
it wasn’t a great start overall and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies lost, Matt
Harvey’s final rehab appearance with Binghamton was his best to date, so
hopefully he can build on some of the positives from it. Harvey started the
game with two scoreless frames, but then Portland jumped on him for five runs
(three earned) over the next three frames, as they jumped ahead 5-2 ad the
mid-point. Binghamton came back to tie things in the 7th, but then
Portland exploded for four runs in the 8th to clinch a Sea Dogs
series win.
Since
going hitless in his first Double-A game, Peter Alonso had one hit in his
second game, two hits in his third game, and now three hits in his fourth game
– he better have a four-hit game tomorrow! He started his big night with a
single in the 1st.
Just
like in his last outing, Harvey worked around some loud contact allowed in the
1st for a scoreless frame. The announcers had him sitting around 93
MPH with his fastball most of the game, and it seemed like he was relying on
the slider as his main secondary option. He had his best inning since his rehab
began in the 2nd, when he got the first batter to pop out and then
struck out the next two.
Luis
Guillorme connected on his 18th double of the season in the 3rd.
Harvey’s
3rd inning problems started when Luis Guillorme committed a rare
error in the field. Guillorme had a long way to run to make the play, and MiLB
scorers sometimes give infield hits on such plays, but the runner was a slow
catcher who hadn’t made it halfway down the line by the time Guillorme botched
it. Chad De La Guerra made Binghamton pay for the error when he stroked a two
run double to RF two batters later, which made this a 2-0 game.
The
Ponies were quick to get those two runs right back in the next frame. Alonso
got the inning started with his second single of the night and then Tomas Nido
tied this game up by launching his 8th homer of the year three
batters later. Kevin Taylor added a single in the frame.
Josh
Ockimey stroked a double to center field against Harvey in the 4th,
and then Cole Sturgeon knocked him in with a grounder through the middle to get
Portland back on top at 3-2. Despite the run allowed, Harvey needed just nine
pitches for the 4th, so Binghamton sent him back out for the 5th.
Mars reached on catcher’s
interference to start the 5th for Portland, but then Harvey was
quick to retire the next two Sea Dogs batters. Unfortunately, Harvey’s final
pitch was called an 87 MPH fastball that sailed right into Jeremy Barfield for
a HBP.
Normally
a starter, Casey Delgado took over for Harvey in a tough situation and came out
wild. He walked two and allowed a two run double before finally escaping the
jam, and both runs were charged to Harvey.
David
Thompson did his part to chip into the lead by blasting a solo blast to right
center field, which made this a 5-3 game in the 6th.
In
the 7th, it was Pete Alonso provided the big hit with an RBI double
to LF. Luis Guillorme and L.J. Mazzilli connected on back-to-back singles
before the Alonso double, and then Oberste brought home Mazzilli to tie the
game after the double.
Meanwhile,
Delgado had settled down to give the Ponies two scoreless frames in the 6th
and 7th innings. Given his background as a starter, Delgado was
asked to work the 8th too, but he had last started on Wednesday, so
he wasn’t exactly fully rested when he took over. The 8th proved too
much for Delgado, and Rumbletown Manager Luis Rojas had to replace him with two
on and just one out.
Cory
Burns was brought into the 8th inning jam and had as much success as
Delgado had in the 5th: basically none. Burns allowed both inherited
runners to score, plus two more, as Portland jumped out to a commanding 9-5
lead.
After
the sudden momentum shift in this game, Binghamton went down quietly in the 9th
and took the L. Looking ahead, the Ponies will look to bounceback from a
disappointing few days behind Corey Oswalt Sunday in the finale.
