Gabriel
Llanes returned to the Fireflies rotation for game one of a double-header
Friday night in Columbia, but the outing got away from him in the 3rd
and the Rome Braves didn’t let up after that. Columbia jumped ahead 2-0 in the
1st but Rome scored the next eight runs unanswered. Keaton Aldridge
took over for Llanes in relief and also had an unfortunate outing, allowing
more than one run for just the third time this year. The Cola bats showed some
life early but finished the game on a 0-10 streak.
The
1st inning started so promisingly for Columbia, as they took
advantage of a pair of Rome walks for a 2-0 lead. Andres Gimenez sparked the
rally with a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Gene Cone single, and then
Cola loaded the bases on a J.J. Franco walk. Gimenez came home on a groundout
and then Ian Strom doubled the scored with an RBI single to right field. Unfortunately
for the Fireflies, Franco was thrown out trying to score on that play, and the
scoring threat ended quickly after that.
Llanes
retired six of the first seven batters he faced, but the one who got to him
connected on a solo homer to start the 2nd – it was Braves 11th
round pick Drew Lugbauer’s first SAL homer after ten in the APPY league earlier
this year (he’s a Pleasant Valley, NY native). Then Bradley Keller greeted
Llanes with a double to start the 3rd, and Rome proceeded to load up
the bases before recording an out. They were able to get three runs out of
their bases loaded, no outs situation, and they might’ve had more if not for a
successfully turned inning ending double play. Llanes bounced back for a
scoreless 4th, but he’d leave trailing 4-2.
Columbia
scrapped together just three hits after the 1st: Strom singled again
in the 3rd, Dan Rizzie lined a single into center field in the 4th,
and then Andres Gimenez flared a ground-rule double down the left field line
later in the 4th.
Keaton
Aldridge allowed a leadoff single to Isranel Wilson in the 5th and
then helped Rome get him to third before the next AB ended (and the next AB
ended in a HBP). A wild pitch advanced Wilson to second and then Aldridge was
charged with a balk on a pickoff attempt – and he had caught Wilson leaving too
early. Rome was able to get Wilson home on a groundout, but Aldridge bounced
back to finish the frame with a strikeout.
The
6th was not kind to Aldridge either. He allowed a single on a ‘soft
fly ball’ to right, an infield single, and then walked a batter to load the
bases. Rome again got three runs from their bases loaded situation, and all
three were charged to Aldridge, although Joseph Zanghi was on the mound when
the final two runs came home.
Zanghi
stayed in for the 7th and worked a scoreless frame to finish off
game one.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will look for more from Justin Brantley in game two as
they hope to salvage a double-header split.
