Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies erupted for six runs in the 7th to come
back and take an 8-3 win over Erie Tuesday night. The Ponies actually scored
first in this one but the Sea Wolves responded with three straight runs and
held a 3-2 lead heading into the 7th. Six Binghamton hits later, the
Ponies had a five-run lead with six outs to go, and Ben Griset took care of
those final two innings with haste.
Marcos
Molina was the Ponies starter who benefitted from the late scoring outburst, as
it netted him his third win of the season. One positive from the Mets system
this year is this late-season surge from Molina, who now has a 2.80 ERA over
his last seven starts: 45 IP, 36 H, 36 K: 10 BB (176 BF), .578 OPS allowed.
He’s still sitting mostly low-90’s, but he’s been topping out at 94 MPH lately,
which is an improvement from when he first came up.
Molina
faced just one over the minimum through the first three innings and then the
Ponies got him a lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Patrick Biondi
singled Kevin Kaczmarski (walk) to third base in the frame, and then Luis
Guillorme doubled them both home to open a 2-0 lead.
The
Sea Wolves wasted little time getting both runs back, as they scored two runs
on three singles and an RBI groundout in the next frame. Molina settled down
and retired 11 of 13 batters before hitting the showers. Unfortunately for
Binghamton, one of those batters he couldn’t retire was Grayson Greiner, who
took him deep to give the Sea Wolves a 3-2 lead.
After
their 3rd inning outburst, the Ponies bats stayed quiet until the 7th
inning rally, which Matt Oberste sparked with a flare single. Oberste went up
to second base on a Tomas Nido single and then Kevin Taylor doubled him home to
tie the game. Kevin Kaczmarski followed with a sac fly to make this a 4-3 game,
but the Ponies weren’t done yet. Biondi followed with an RBI single to bring
home Taylor, and then advanced to second on the play. This set up an RBI
opportunity for Guillorme, who singled Biondi home against a new Erie reliever
to make it 6-3. After L.J. Mazzilli worked a walk to keep the inning alive,
Peter Alonso capped the scoring with a two-run triple off the center field wall.
With
the lead well in hand, Rumbletown Manager Luis Rojas went to Ben Griset for the
final two frames and he retired six in a row to close out the Ponies 80th
win of the year.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will look to make it three-straight over Erie Wednesday night
behind Mickey Jannis.
