Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s road trip to Sacramento got started on the wrong foot Monday, as
they took a 3-2 loss in the opener of their series with the River Cats. Luis
Mateo made his third straight appearance as a starter for Las Vegas in the
loss, and he finished just one out shy of what would’ve been his first
five-inning performance in nearly 4.5 years. Mateo left trailing 2-1 but the
51s scored in the 7th to get him off the hook for the loss.
Unfortunately for Las Vegas, the River Cats got to Jacob Rhame during his
second inning of work to jump ahead 3-2 and win the opener.
Since
it’s so late in the season and the 51s were desperate for starting pitching,
this isn’t necessarily a full-time move for Mateo. Despite the added workload,
Mateo’s been basically the same mid-90’s-and-a-slider pitcher he was in the pen.
He does have a changeup that he’s mixed in a touch more during this run as a
starter, but it’s not a pitch he used much as a reliever, so it hasn’t been
very effective for him. There is no data to confirm this, but it did seem like
Mateo was more in the 95-96 MPH range with his heater in this outing than he
had previously been as a reliever, which is something Russ Langer noted early
on too.
Mateo
walked the first River Cats batter of the game but faced just one over the
minimum through three.
The
51s opened the game with back-to-back singles but failed to score in the 1st.
Jhoan
Urena put the 51s on the scoreboard with a solo blast in the 2nd to
make this a 1-0 game.
Josh
Rodriguez singled and the 51s loaded the bases in the 4th, but it
was just another wasted scoring opportunity. The 51s went just 1-10 with
runners in scoring position Monday night, and they left eleven runners on base.
The
River Cats scratched out a run on two singles in the 4th to even
things up at 1-1. The singles put runners on the corners with one out and then
Mateo got the double play ball he needed, but the 51s needed to tag Mac
Williamson out in a rundown, and Williamson stayed away from the tag long
enough for the run to score on the play.
The
51s got back-to-back hits from Phillip Evath,
but a double play grounder cut any potential rally short in the frame.

Mateo
walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 5th and then Ali
Castillo came all the way around from first to score on an E3 (throwing error),
which gave Sacramento a 2-1 lead. Mateo was given a chance to finish the frame,
but he’d walk Steven Duggar to put two on with two outs, so Manager Pedro Lopez
had to come out and relieve him. Lopez went to Kyle Regnault, and Regnault
induced an inning ending groundout to strand those runners.
Xorge
Carrillo added his hit in the top of the 6th and Regnault stuck
around for a scoreless bottom half.
After
the good work from Regnault out of the pen, the 51s struck for a run to tie
this game in the 7th.
Travis Snider singled home Dale Burdick after both Burdick and Evans had
worked walks in the frame.
Jacob
Rhame took over for the 51s in the 7th and worked a quick 1-2-3
frame, striking out Juniel Querecuto and Slade Heathcott along the way. He’d
stick around for the 8th, but found his second inning of work a
little tougher. Orlando Calixte reached on an infield single, stole second, and
then scored on a Chris Shaw double. Rhame bounced back by striking out Williamson
and Ryan Lollis to end the frame, but the damage had already been done.
Although
things looked bleak, the 51s were given everything they needed to come back and
win this game at the start of the 9th. River Cats reliever Tyler
Rogers walked two and hit another to load the bases before an out was recorded,
which led to a pitching change. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, Steven Okert got
Snider to go down swinging and then induced a double play to end the game before
the tying run could score.
Looking
ahead, the 51s have three more games in Sacramento before they head home to
wrap up the season at Cashman Field.
