Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies opened a mid-week series in Greenville with a big 14-7 win
over the Drive. While offense obviously played a huge role in the outcome, the
real star of the game was the Cola starter Jose Carlos Medina. The lefty tossed
six scoreless en route to his first SAL win, and his performance looks even
more impressive when you consider the seven runs allowed by Fireflies relievers
after he left. Offensively, every Fireflies starter reached base at least once
except for Gene Cone, who still contributed with an RBI in the win. While Dan
Rizzie led the way with three hits, both Luis Carpio and Brandon Brosher
connected on three-run homers, and Ian Strom added a solo blast of his own.
The
soft-tossing Medina was matched up against Jay Groome, a recent 1st
round pick of the Sox who sits upper-90’s with his heater, so the two lefties
couldn’t have been more different. For the first two innings, it didn’t matter,
as neither side had a base runner until the 3rd. Medina retired the
first ten Drive batters he faced, striking out Brett Netzer and Isaias Lucena
along the way.
Like
many young hard-thrower’s, Groome has had command problems at times this year,
and those started for him in the 3rd on Tuesday. Groome walked the
first two batters of the 3rd and four overall in the frame, but he
held Columbia hitless, so the Fireflies only opened up a 1-0 lead.
Groome
then walked the first two batters of the 4th before being replaced
on the mound by Lukas Young. In total, Groome walked six of nine batters faced
during the 3rd and 4th innings, but he didn’t allow a hit
in his outing. Young took over and the Cola hits started falling right in. Dan
Rizzie and Arnaldo Berrios hit back-to-back RBI doubles to get the 4th
inning scoring started, and then Andres Gimenez and J.J. Franco connected on
back-to-back RBI singles to cap it.
The
Drive finally got a base runner against Medina in the 4th when
Santiago Espinal reached on an infield hit and moved up to second on an E5
throwing error. However, Medina had no problem working around the single,
striking out Bobby Dalbec swinging to end the frame.
Strom
went deep leading off the 5th – homerun number three for Strom.
Three
straight Drive batters reached on a walk, bunt hit, and single into CF against
Medina in the 5th. He recovered to strikeout Mitchell Gunsolus, and
then Tyler Hill flew out to end the threat.
Berrios
added his second hit in the 6th.
Medina
racked up two more strikeouts as he worked around another infield single from
Greenville in the 6th. Of the four hits Medina allowed, just one
left the infield, and he left with a 7-0 lead.
Brandon
Brosher came up with two on and two outs in the 7th and provided a
key blast to right-center to make this a 10-0 game – his 13th homer
of the season. Rizzie followed with a single that led to nothing.
With
the game seemingly in hand, Aaron Ford took over in the 7th and
tossed a quick 1-2-3 frame, striking out Lucena along the way.
Columbia
put together one last long rally in the 8th, and it all started with
two outs. J.J. Franco kept the inning alive with a single, advanced to second
on a walk, and then Dash Winningham singled him home. After a pitching change,
Luis Carpio came up and launched his third homer of the season.
The
break might’ve been too long for Aaron Ford, who struggled after returning to
the mound in the 8th. He’d allow two homerun’s, including a grand
slam, and Greenville cut the score to 14-5 by the time the frame was finally
over. Ford did finish his outing on a high note, getting Jagger Rusconi to go
down swinging for another strikeout.
Rizzie
added a final Columbia hit in the top of the 9th. With the game well
in hand, Cola Manager Jose Leger went to Joseph Zanghi, who chose the right
night to put up a stinker. Zanghi walked two and allowed a pair of singles, which
just amounted to an extra pair of runs for Greenville.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies have two more games in Greenville before they head north
to Hickory for a weekend series with the Crawdads that won’t be available on
