Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies finished a four-game sweep of Portland Sunday with a
4-3 win behind their third seven-inning complete of the series. Due to the
rules about playing two minor league games in a day, all four games were
scheduled to last seven innings, and the Ponies only went to the bullpen in a
game interrupted by a night of rain. Although he stumbled early, Corey Oswalt
continued his great 2017 season with another ‘quality start,’ which gave
Binghamton a good chance to comeback for the win. Matt Oberste led the way
offensively with three hits, and Binghamton got important contributions from
each of the top-6 in the lineup at the end.
Of
the eight Portland base runners Oswalt allowed Sunday (group includes the homer
allowed), half of them reached in the 1st when the Sea Dogs jumped
out to a 3-0 lead. Josh Tobias connected on a one-out single, Oswalt hit the
next batter, and then Jeremy Barfield made it 3-0 with his 23rd
homerun of the season. Portland’s Henry Urrutia doubled later in the frame, and
he would be the last Sea Dogs batter to reach second base.
After
the 1st, Oswalt only allowed multiple hits in one frame, and a
caught stealing from Patrick Mazeika separated those two hits. Oswalt retired
13 of the final 15 batters he faced, which kept the door open for Binghamton’s
comeback.
The
Ponies comeback efforts were slow to get started, as they managed just three
singles over the first five innings against Portland starter Teddy Stankiewicz:
Kevin Taylor had the first Bingo hit in the 2nd, and then Matt Oberste
and David Thompson connected on back-to-back singles in the 4th.
Binghamton
was able to knock Stankiewicz out after the first two reached in the 6th,
but they were only able to get one run out of the situation. Kevin Kaczmarski
and Oberste started the frames with singles, which put runners on the corners
with nobody out. However, the next two Ponies batters went down swinging, so
Portland had a chance to get out of the frame unscored upon. Fortunately for
Binghamton, L.J. Mazzilli worked a walk to keep the frame alive and then Patrick
Mazeika came through with a two out single to get the Ponies on the board and
make this a 3-1 game.
In the 7th, Luis Guillorme
worked a one-out walk to get the walkoff rally going. Kaczmarski and Oberste
followed with singles to get Guillorme around and make this a one run game. An
RBI groundout from David Thompson followed to tie the game and then Kevin
Taylor provided the game-winner with a single to right field.
