Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies struggles with runners in scoring position continued
into game two Friday night, but they overcame those problems for a 2-1 win in
the nightcap of their double-header with Portland. The Ponies are now 4-43 with
runners in scoring position over the past five games, although they’ve only
been outscored 9-8 during the stretch, so they’ve come away with a 2-3 record.
After spending three weeks in the
bullpen, P.J. Conlon made the start for Binghamton and went three scoreless out
of the gates. He allowed a pair of two-out singles in the 2nd, but
retired the other nine batters he faced, with four strikeouts.
Luis
Guillorme started the game with a single and connected on another hit in the 3rd,
but the Ponies couldn’t get him home for an early lead. Peter Alonso’s first
hit came in the 4th, and Kevin Kaczmarski’s hit came in the 5th.
Drew
Smith took over for Conlon in the 4th and worked around a two out
double for a scoreless frame. Smith handed the ball off to Adonis Uceta for the
5th, and Uceta kept the shutout going through five.
Binghamton
finally broke the seal on the scoring with a run in the 6th, and the
frame started with a single from Matt Oberste. Patrick Biondi was sent in to
pinch-run for Oberste, and Biondi came around to score on back-to-back singles
from Alonso and Kevin Taylor. The Ponies had a chance to add on in the frame,
but Portland brought in reliever Jake Cosart and Cosart retired three straight
to keep it a 1-0 game.
Despite
the long top half of the 6th, the Ponies stuck with Uceta for the
bottom half and he started the frame a little wild. He issued a leadoff walk to
Danny Mars and then uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed Mars to advance to
second. Portland was able to get Mars home in the frame to tie the game, and
they were threatening for more when a double play turned Uceta’s fortunes
around. He finished the frame with a strikeout of Jeremy Barfield.
Guillorme’s
earlier hits led to nothing for Binghamton, but he led off the 7th
with a walk and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run. Kaczmarski
sac bunted Guillorme to second base, a wild pitch got him to third, and then
David Thompson brought him home on a sac fly. Biondi later reached on an infield hit in the frame
With
the lead back in tow, Rumbletown Manager Luis Rojas brought in his other new
flamethrowing righty to close the game out. Tyler Bashlor allowed a leadoff
double but struck out the final two batters of the game to strand that runner
at third base and pick up his second Double-A save of the year.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies will try to even this five-game series Saturday night behind
Matt Harvey, who will be making his final rehab appearance of the year.
