Hickory Crawdads @ Columbia Fireflies
April 10-12, 2017
This
is a breakdown of the Columbia Fireflies April series against the Hickory
Crawdads. The goal with these ‘Series in Review’ posts wasn’t to cover the series
as fully as I normally would but to highlight a few players who didn’t get as
much coverage throughout the rest of the season.

Series in Review
The
Fireflies made it 5 straight wins (and 3 shutouts) to start the 2017 season
when they took the opener with Hickory 3-0 on 4/10. Colin Holderman made the
start for Columbia and cooked the Crawdads for 11 K’s over 6 IP with just 1 hit
allowed. Holderman’s fastball/curveball combo was too much for the Crawdads and
he looked poised for a big year, but then injuries struck and Holderman
finished the year with just 10 appearances made. The Cola lineup worked another
7 walks in this one, but they finished with 0 extra base hits and went just
2-11 with runners in scoring position. In total, the three Cola pitchers faced
31 batters and combined for 16 K: 1 BB in the win.

The
Fireflies first loss of 2017 came with Blake Taylor on the mound, although that
became an all too common theme of Taylor’s starts this year. Not like a pitcher’s
W/L-record means anything, especially in A-ball, but Taylor finished just 1-9 this
year (his first win came on 7/3) before shutting in down at the end of July. He
took a 1-0 shutout into the 6th but then a big inning for Hickory
turned the game around – several of his starts were derailed by one big inning.
The Cola lineup put up its first dud of 2017, as they scored just once and struck
out 12 times in the 5-1 loss. Austin McGeorge and Adonis Uceta each allowed a
run over 2 innings of relief for Columbia.

Harol
Gonzalez turned in a better outing than his first start but the Fireflies still
lost the game and the series. There weren’t really any fresh highlights from
the game.
