Recapish
It
hasn’t happened often this season, but the Binghamton Rumble Ponies flexed some
homer power for a third straight win over Erie Wednesday. Kevin Kaczmarski went
deep two batters into the bottom of the 1st and then Peter Alonso
followed with his first Double-A homer. Alonso added another monster solo blast
later in the game to give Binghamton a three-homer game, which has been an uncommon
feat in 2017. The power display came in support of Mickey Jannis, who took a
shutout into the 8th and finished one out shy of eight scoreless.
Since
I already mentioned the 1st inning homers for Binghamton, might as
well start there. The two homers led to a 3-0 lead because Luis Guillorme
started the frame with yet another walk.
Guillorme
singled home L.J. Mazzilli after he doubled in the 2nd to make this
a 4-0 game.
Rumbletown
starter Mickey Jannis cruised through much of this start, facing the minimum in
five of the eight frames he pitched in. The Sea Wolves best threat early came
when Mike Gerber and Christin Stewart both singled in the 4th
inning, but Steven Moya followed with an inning ending double play grounder, so
that threat did not last long.
Meanwhile,
the Ponies bats went quiet for a few innings after the early scoring outburst.
However, Pete Alonso woke everyone up in the 6th when he connected
on a loud homer to the railyard to make this a 5-0 game. The Ponies didn’t
score again after that, but they did add three more hits: Tomas Nido singled
later in the 6th, Luis Giullorme hit his 20th double of
the season in the 7th, and David Thompson connected on his 29th
double in the 8th.
Erie
finally broke through with two outs in the top of the 8th. Gabriel
Quintana singled to keep the inning alive and then came around to score on an
infield single two batters later.
Rumbletown Manager Luis Rojas went
to his bullpen after the shutout was gone, bringing in lefty P.J. Conlon to
close things out. Conlon struck out Mike Gerber to clean up the 8th
inning mess and then stuck around for a scoreless 9th to earn his
first save of the year.
Looking
ahead, the Rumble Ponies will send Casey Delgado to the hill with a chance to
sweep Erie out of town Thursday.
