Recapish
At
this point, it’s no secret that the Cyclones (17-47 record after the win) are
not having a good year, whereas Staten Island (40-24) is, and the Yanks Sunday
starter Jorge Guzman definitely is: 4-2, 2.03 ERA, 78 K: 16 BB in 57.2 IP. So
of course the Cyclones went out and won on 6-0, this is baseball after all, and
‘ya can’t predict ball.’ Four errors and a passed ball from the Yanks made the
Cyclones job a little easier on the offensive end, but it was the work done by
Brooklyn pitcher’s that won this game.
This
was the second time Brooklyn beat Guzman this year, and the Cyclones have been
responsible for three of Guzman’s ‘worst’ starts this year. I have to use
quotes there because Guzman has only allowed more than three earned runs once this year, and this
was just the this start with more than five hits allowed, so it’s not like his
bad starts have been very bad.
Guzman
faced just four batters and struck out the side in the 1st, but he
issued a walk to Walter Rasquin, and that was enough for Brooklyn to jump ahead
1-0. Rasquin stole second and went to third on a throwing error during the
attempt. Then, before Jose Medina even struck out, Rasquin came home on a
passed ball for the first run of the game.
Given
he started his season with some scoreless outings from the Cola pen, this
season has turned out to be a pretty disappointing one for Jake Simon. As with
many young starters, command has been the problem for Simon, as he apparently
struggles repeating the same mechanics from pitch-to-pitch. He threw 61%
strikes Sunday, but he still issued three walks over just 3+ innings of work.
Fortunately for Brooklyn, Simon was able to work around a pair of base runners
in the 2nd and a bases loaded situation in the 3rd.
Simon
started his outing with a perfect 1st and then Brooklyn set out to
get him some insurance runs. Wagner Lagrange got a quick 2nd inning
rally started with a single, went to third on a Jose Maria double, and then
Scott Manea singled them both home.
Rasquin
led off the 3rd with a double and then Medina doubled him home to
make it a 4-0 lead. Medina eventually came around to score on Lagrange’s second
hit of the game.
The
speedy Guillermo Granadillo reached on an E6 in the 4th, stole
second, and then came home on another hit from Walter Rasquin.
Gregorix
Estevez took over for Simon with two on and one out in the 4th and
quickly escaped the jam, striking out Wilkerman Garcia to end the frame.
Estevez stuck around for a scoreless 5th with two more strikeouts,
which was enough to earn him a win.
Estevez
yielded to Cannon Chadwick in the 6th and the Brooklyn righty would
strikeout four Yanks batters over his two scoreless frames. Chadwick ran into
trouble when Staten Island loaded the bases in the 6th, but he
escaped with the help of a 6-4-3 double play.
The
Cyclones managed just a few hits after the early scoring binge: Rasquin led off
the 7th with a single, Manea singled in the 8th, and then
Dylan Snypes led off the 9th with a single.
Looking
for a second straight win, BK Manager Edgardo Alfonzo went to Trey Cobb for the
8th. The Peach
Cobber started his outing with a strikeout of Timmy Robinson and faced just
one over the minimum during two scoreless frames to close out the win.
After
finally winning two straight games again, this clip seems very
appropriate for the Cyclones. The team won’t be celebrating much success from
this year, but the players on it can still finish strong and put together a
nice streak to end the year – after all, there is no bonus for tanking in
rookie ball.
