Recapish
Rain
has been a constant for the Rumble Ponies this season, and it butted its wet
head again Saturday evening in Binghamton. The Ponies and Sea Dogs were
scheduled to make up a game that was rained out earlier in the season as part
of a double-header Saturday, but the rains came before the two teams could even
finish game one. The game would be suspended Saturday and finished before
Sunday’s regularly scheduled game. The delay came at a perfect time for
Binghamton, as Ponies start Mickey Jannis had been on the ropes early Saturday,
but his replacement Drew Smith was nearly perfect in relief Sunday, which allowed
for an eventual walkoff win.
Mickey
Jannis worked a perfect 3rd inning, but he allowed seven base
runners across the other three frames he worked. He got out of a bases loaded
jam in the 1st when the Ponies turned a 5-4-3 double play behind
him. Tomas Nido helped him through the second with a caught stealing, which
erased the first of two straight to reach in the 2nd. Finally, there
were two on with just one out in the 4th when the game was
suspended.
While
the day change made a difference for the Ponies on the mound, it made little
difference at the plate. Binghamton managed just two hits on Saturday: Kevin
Taylor led off the 2nd with a single and Kevin Kaczmarski doubled
with two outs in the 3rd.
When
the game resumed Sunday, Drew Smith found himself taking over a tough spot out
of the pen: two on and just one out. He got Mike Olt to pop out for the second
out of the frame and then struck out the next seven batters. He’s consistent
mid-90’s heat with a nice curve, so he’s been a nice little addition to the Mets
system.
While
Smith was taking over the show with his performance from the mound, Portland’s
reliever Taylor Grover was matching him zero-for-zero. Grover allowed just two hits
over four innings of relief for the Sea Dogs: Champ Stuart singled in the 5th
and Tomas Nido singled in the 7th.
Tim
Peterson took over for Smith in the 7th and worked two scoreless
frames to keep the Bingo shutout alive. The Ponies made him a winner when they
walked off in the bottom of the 8th. Luis Guillorme coaxed a one out
walk against new reliever Ty Buttrey and then Kevin Kaczmarski played the role
of hero. Kacz connected on his second double of the game to bring Guillorme
home from first and give the Ponies a 1-0 win.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies turn to Corey Oswalt as they wrap up this series with
Portland Sunday afternoon (about thirty minutes after this game ended).
