Recapish
After
a tight battle required ten innings for a decision in game one, the Binghamton
Rumble Ponies and New Hampshire Fisher Cats were right back at it playing
another tight contest in game two. The Ponies were able to walkoff victoriously
at the end of game one, but the Cats were able to hold on for a 3-2 win to earn
the split in game two. The two teams combined for 32 hits over 17 innings
Wednesday, but 29 of those hits were singles and they combined to score just
eight runs. The Ponies lack of scoring can be traced directly to their success
(or lack thereof) with runners in scoring position. They went 1-10 with runners
in scoring position during both games (so 2-20 total Wednesday), and they left
17 runners on base during the double-header.
Casey
Delgado gave the Ponies two perfect innings out of the gates, but then Manager
Luis Rojas went to the pen for the final five innings. I’m not totally sure why
they backed off him, but I’m guessing they’ll need him to start again on short
rest this week, so they didn’t want to push him too much.
Ben
Griset took over for Delgado in the 3rd and immediately ran into
some trouble. The first two New Hampshire batters connected on singles against
Griset, and then they jumped ahead 1-0 on a sac fly in the frame. Griset
bounced back with a scoreless 4th, but left trailing 1-0.
Binghamton
took advantage of a catcher’s interference call in the bottom of the 4th
to get that run back and take Griset off the hook. Matt Oberste knocked in the
run with the only hit of the frame.
Rumbletown
Manager Luis Rojas went to Drew Smith for the 5th and he also ran
into some trouble right away. Smith walked three in the frame, including one
with the bases loaded, as the Cats opened a 3-1 lead.
The
Ponies got one run back in the bottom of the 5th, but their comeback
rally came up 90 feet short of a tie. Tyler Moore singled Gustavo Nunez (walk)
to second base with no outs in the frame, and then both runners advanced on a
throwing error. The next two Ponies hit groundouts, and Nunez was able to come
home on the first one, but Moore froze at third base on the second one, and
stayed stranded at third base.
Ideally the Ponies would’ve sent a
pinch-runner in for Moore in that spot, but Tomas Nido caught game one (and was
DH’ing game two) and Patrick Mazeika left game one unexpectedly (and has since
been placed on the DL), so the Ponies didn’t really have a good backup catcher
option on the bench for if Moore came out.
Corey
Taylor took over on the mound for Binghamton in the 6th and he gave
the Ponies two perfect innings of relief, striking out Gunnar Heidt and Derrick
Loveless along the way. He kept the door open for a comeback, and the Ponies
threatened in each of the final two frames, but they just couldn’t get the
tying run home.
In
the 6th, Matt Oberste and David Thompson connected on back-to-back
singles with one out, but then never advanced. Tyler Moore led off the 7th
with a double, but he was erased trying to reach third on a comebacker.
Looking ahead, the Ponies turn to Marcos Molina Thursday as they hit the road for a five game series in Portland.
