Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones were whiffed off the island Friday night, taking a 3-2 loss
to the Staten Island Yankees, whose pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts in the
win. Brooklyn starter Jose Geraldo turned in a solid five-inning performance,
allowing just the one earned run on four hits and finishing with five
strikeouts, but the Yanks pitching was better on this night. Four Yanks
pitchers combined for the 17-K performance – Trevor Stephan had six, Glenn Otto
had four, Greg Weissert had five and issued the only walk, and Eduardo Rivera
had two – although none of them went more than three innings.
Walter
Rasquin hit a 1st inning double for Brooklyn, which is something
he’s been good for every time the Cyclones have been on MiLB.tv this year, or
at least it feels that way. He ended up at third base on the play but the next
two Brooklyn players went down swinging, so the Cyclones had wasted a key
opportunity.
Jose
Geraldo started his outing with a strikeout of Wilkerman Garcia, and had an out
been recorded on the play, this game might’ve turned out a little differently.
Unfortunately for Brooklyn, Scott Manea was charged with a passed ball on the
play, which allowed Garcia to reach, and then he advanced to second base on a
wild pitch. Kendall Coleman made Brooklyn pay for those mistakes with an RBI
double to put the Yanks up 1-0. Geraldo recovered to strikeout Timmy Robinson
and strand Coleman at third in the frame.
Jeremy
Vasquez singled in the 2nd.
The
Cyclones evened things up in the 3rd without the help of a hit,
unless you count the two batters who were hit by a pitch.
Manea
and Guillermo Granadillo connected on singles in the 4th.
After
the weirdness of the 1st, Geraldo retired seven in a row before
allowing a single to Keith Skinner in the 4th. Skinner ended up at
second on the play after an E8 throwing error, and then Ryan Krill singled him
home two batters later.
Geraldo
allowed a leadoff homer to Andy Diaz in the 5th, which gave the
Yanks a 3-1 lead. The Brooklyn starter finished his outing with a strikeout of
Coleman to end the 5th.
Placido
Torres took over for Geraldo in the 6th and struggled with command
issues, but he stuck around for 1.2 scoreless innings of work. Connor O’Neil
wrapped up the 7th for Torres and then tossed a scoreless 8th
to keep this a 3-1 game.
The
Cyclones managed just one hit after the 4th inning, but that hit was
enough to cut the deficit in half and make things a little more interesting in
the 9th. Jeremy Vasquez provided the knock when he connected on his
first NYPL homer of the year – he hit seven with Kingsport before his
promotion.
Looking
ahead, this series shifts to Brooklyn for Saturday’s game and then will be on
MiLB.tv again on Sunday. After that, these two will meet once more on 9/6 for
the Cyclones last appearance on MiLB.tv of 2017.
