Recapish

The Brooklyn Cyclones bats came alive Sunday evening, rallying for ten runs on seventeen hits, but the Valley Cats made more of their eleven hits and walked away with a 13-10 win. After two straight very strong outings for Brooklyn, Jose Geraldo struggled out of the gates Sunday and had to be relieved in the 2nd inning. There must’ve been something in the air though Sunday, because Geraldo wasn’t the only pitcher who struggled. Combined, eight pitchers came into this game, and only one of them finished with a scoreless outing. Everyone in the Cylcones lineup reached base safely at least twice, except for Jose Medina, who did still have a double in this game.
The Cyclones offense hit the ground running with three straight hits out of the gate to open a 2-0 lead. Dylan Snypes and Walter Rasquin connected on back-to-back doubles, and then Quinn Brodey singled Rasquin home. Jeremy Vasquez kept things going with a single two batters later, and then both lefty swingers came around to score when Bryan De La Cruz committed a two-base error in RF.

Tri-City wasted no time chipping away at the lead in the bottom of the 1st. J.J. Matijevic doubled to center and then scored on an Adrian Tovalin two-run homer.

Brooklyn strung together a few hits for another run in the 2nd. Dylan Snypes reached on a one-out single, went to third on Rasquin’s second straight double, and then Brodey followed with a second straight RBI single to left field.

The Valley Cats put together a big rally against Geraldo in the bottom of the 2nd, and eventually Placido Torres had to come in and bail the big righty out. Geraldo created the problems for himself early in the frame, as he loaded the bases on a HBP and two walks with just one out. Tri-City got two runs home on a De La Cruz single in the frame, but an error probably helped keep the inning going longer than it should’ve. As a result, three extra runs came home for the Cats, with two scoring on Adrian Tovalin’s double to make this a 7-5 game.

Torres took over for Geraldo after the Tovalin double and eventually picked him off at second base.

Scott Manea led off the BK 3rd with a single, advanced to third base on back-to-back wild pitches, and then came around to score on a Guillermo Granadillo groundout (although it looks like Granadillo was safe at first base). Carlos Sanchez also reached on an infield single in the frame, but Manea had to hold at third on the hit.

The first scoreless frame for either side came in the bottom of the 3rd, when a double play helped Torres work around some trouble to maintain the 7-6 score.

Brodey made it a 3-3 start to his day with another single in the 4th.

Matijevic slugged his fifth homer of the year to start the Tri-City 4th, which made this an 8-6 game.
The back-and-forth style affair continued in the 5th, when Brooklyn rallied for three runs to jump back in front 9-8. Vasquez started the frame with a single and moved up to third on some wild pitches, although he would’ve made it there anyway since the next two batters worked walks. After a pitching change, Granadillo singled home Vasquez to make it 8-7. Franklin Correa came home on a wild pitch later in the frame to tie things up, and then an E6 opened the door for Granadillo to score the go-ahead run.

Stolen base for Rasquin

Of course, no lead was safe Sunday, and the Cats were quick to rally and tie things up in the bottom half of the 5th. Cannon Chadwick had taken over for Brooklyn and he began his outing with a walk to Colton Shaver. Tri-City worked Shaver around to third base, and then he came home on a wild pitch to make this a 9-9 game.

Brooklyn jumped back on top again in the 7th, and this time it was a Correa double that got things started. Sanchez and Granadillo followed with singles to get the run in, but the Cyclones couldn’t add on further in the frame.

Tony Dibrell took over for the bottom of the 7th and his shaky pro debut with Brooklyn continued. He allowed a leadoff double and four runs in the frame, one of which was considered unearned. Dibrell did strikeout three batters in the 7th and another pair in the 8th, but the damage done against him was the difference in this game.

The Cyclones had two more hits left in their bats for the 8th: Jose Medina started the frame with a double and then Manea reached on an infield single two batters later.

Looking ahead, the Cyclones will try to put a stop to their losing streak Monday before it reaches ten games and before they head back home Tuesday.
