Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s bats finally came alive in Thursday’s finale with Sacramento, but
the team still took an 8-7 loss to the River Cats to get swept out of town. 51s
starter Robert Gsellman was sent down for this start so he could work on his stuff
over about 100 pitches and not worry about the results, which, unfortunately for
Las Vegas, got ugly. The 51s battled all the way back for a 9th
inning tie after Gsellman left, but then the River Cats won on a walkoff in the
bottom half anyway.
Phil
Evans was responsible for a lot of the 51s offense, as he connected on four
hits – including two doubles and a homer – scored twice and had two RBI’s.
Evans started his big night with a 1st inning double.
Gsellman
allowed a hit to each of the first three Sacramento batters and quickly found
himself down 2-0. Jae-Gyun Hwang’s tenth homer of the year accounted for both
River Cats runs two batters into the frame, and then it still took Gsellman a
few batters to settle in. Gsellman eventually settled down to retire eight of
nine batters, which took him through the 3rd.
With
their starter settling in, the 51s bats went to work to get him some runs in
the 4th. Jayce Boyd started the frame with a single and then Jhoan
Urena stroked a two-run shot to make this a 2-2 game. Victor Cruzado added a
single two batters later.
Things
got weird in the bottom of the 4th, which allowed Sacramento to get
both of those runs back on a single and two walks. In one of the weirdest, most
rookie-ball quality sequences I’ve ever seen, the River Cats scored two runs on
a walk with runners on the corners. Instead of bases loaded and two outs, two
runs came home and that was the difference in the game. In short, the catcher
decided to throw through to second base on ball four and everything went wrong
after that.
Sacramento
put one last crooked number on the board against Gsellman in the 6th.
The rally started with three straight hits – two singles sandwiching an RBI
double – and then Slade Heathcott added an RBI single later in the frame to
make this a 7-2 game.
Gsellman
clearly wasn’t at his sharpest in this one, but he could’ve finished with a
better line had his defense been a little sharper behind him. Still, while he
left his team behind on the scoreboard, his presence seemed to give the team a
lift, as they were trying to pick their starter up on the offensive side. The
51s rallied for four right after he left to make this a one run game.
Jio Mier got the rally started with
a one-out single to CF, went to second base on a John Mora walk, and then
scored on Evans second double of the game. Mora came home on a balk with Jeff
McNeil at the plate, although he would’ve been able to trot home a few pitches
later anyway, as McNeil went deep for his first Triple-A homerun. The homer was
huge for Las Vegas in this game, as it made this a one-run game, but wins have
even less meaning for the team at this point in the season. The real bonus for
McNeil was that he hit it in front of his parents, who had driven across the
state to watch him play.
Kelly
Secrest took over for Gsellman in the 7th and worked around some
trouble for a scoreless frame. Tom Gorzelanny and Kevin McGowan combined for a
scoreless 8th to keep this an 8-7 game.
After
the 51s charged back in the 7th, Sacramento went to D.J. Snelten for
the 8th and he responded with a perfect frame. Snelten stayed on for
the 9th and quickly found himself one out away from a perfect two-inning
save. Fortunately for the 51s, Phillip Evans was in beast mode for this game,
and he launched a game-tying solo blast to keep this game alive… at least for a
little longer.
McGowan
was asked to stay out there for a second inning of work in the 9th and
things did not go well. He retired the first batter but then Ryan Lollis
singled through the right side to get things started for Sacramento. McGowan
walked the next batter, which put a runner in scoring position for Juan
Ciriaco. Ciriaco happily played the role of hero for the Sacramento faithful,
connecting on a walkoff single to complete the four-game sweep.
Looking
ahead, the 51s return home to wrap up the season this weekend.
