Recapish
After
struggling to a 2-4 record earlier to end last week, the Rumble Ponies got back
to their dominant ways to start the new week, taking a 7-1 win over Portland in
the finale of this five-game set. Although the score technically was close until the 9th – with Binghamton holding
onto a 3-1 lead starting in the 4th – the Ponies pitchers were
picking Portland’s lineup apart piece-by-piece from the get go, so the Sea Dogs
seemed sunk even before the score said they definitely were.
Matt
Oberste connected on the first hit of the game when he reached on a leadoff
single in the 2nd, but the Ponies couldn’t get him beyond second
base.
Corey
Oswalt walked at least three batters for the sixth time in 24 starts this year,
which is a bit often, although his walk rate for the season (7.4%) is just
fine. He issued a walk in each of the first two frames, but he was able to work
around them for a pair of scoreless frames. He struck out two in the 1st
and the Ponies turned a double play behind him to help him through the 2nd.
Oswalt then worked his first of two perfect frames in the 3rd.
Peter
Alonso sparked the Ponies first rally with a leadoff double in the 4th.
He went to third on an E3 and then L.J. Mazzilli singled him home. The Ponies
added two more before the inning was over, with Gustavo Nunez providing an RBI
double to cap the scoring in the frame.
Portland
responded with a run in the bottom of the 4th after Oswalt walked
the leadoff batter, Michael Chavis. Henry Urrutia singled Chavis to third base
two batters later, and then he came home to score Portland’s only run on a
groundout. Oswalt would allow the leadoff man to reach again in the 5th,
but then retired the final six batters of his night.
The
Ponies threatened but could not add on in the 6th. Kevin Taylor
connected on a one-out double and Mazzilli singled him to third base, but then
Tyler Moore hit into a double play, which ended the frame.
Rumbletown
Manager Luis Rojas went to the pen in the 7th and brought in lefty
Ben Griset. Griset struck out one over a scoreless frame before handing the
ball off to Tim Peterson for the 8th. Portland put two runners on
against Peterson, but then he struck out the next two batters to secure a
scoreless frame.
Portland
brought in reliever Ty Buttrey for the 9th and he got wild, which is
how this game got out of hand. Kevin Taylor and L.J. Mazzilli started the frame
with singles against Buttrey, but then he walked four straight batters before
hitting the showers. Binghamton still had the bases loaded with nobody out
after Buttrey came out, but new reliever Jacob Dahlstrand did a good job by
limiting the Ponies to a sac fly.
Although
the save opportunity was long gone, Rojas still went to hard-throwing righty
Tyler Baslor for the 9th. He walked the leadoff batter but then
retired three straight to finish the game. Walks have generally been a problem
for Tyler Bashlor, but that was just his third walk in now 12.2 IP since
joining the Rumble Ponies, so hopefully this is a sign he’s figuring some
things out.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies head home to play out the 2017 season and prepare for a
postseason run. They have eight games left and all eight will be played at
NYSEG Stadium, and then the first two games of round one will be played at
NYSEG, so they are essentially starting a 10-game home stand.
