Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s dropped a second straight in Sacramento Tuesday night, as River
Cats starter Matt Gage turned in seven sparkling innings for a 3-1 win. 51s
starter Mitch Atkins wasn’t bad either, but his quality-start worthy outing got
almost no run support. The 51s offense has been middle of the pack in the PCL
this season, and this lineup was missing four of the teams top 2017 performers
(Amed Rosario, Dominic Smith, Kevin Plawecki, and Travis Taijeron), so it
shouldn’t come as a surprise that they struggled to score. Plus, three of
Tuesday’s starters were playing for St. Lucie two weeks ago, and that’s a big
jump.
One
of those recent St. Lucie Mets players, Jeff McNeil, started the game with an infield single, but then never advanced beyond first base.
Mitch
Atkins faced the minimum over the first three, although that was only made
possible because the 51s turned a pair of double plays behind him early.
Phillip
Evans, who has been one of the 51s top second-half performers, started the 4th
with a double. He was still on second base when Josh Rodriguez came up three
batters later and J Rod came through with the two-out RBI single to make this a
1-0 game.
Sacramento
turned that one-run deficit into a one-run lead with one swing of the bat in
the bottom of the 4th. Mac Williamson connected on a two-run homer
with two outs to give the River Cats a 2-1 lead and they never looked back. Ali
Castillo tripled and scored for Sacramento in the 5th, which gave
them the 3-1 lead they won by.
After
a strong outing from Mitch Atkins, 51s Manager Pedro Lopez went to his pen in
the 7th to try and keep this game close. Lopez called upon Kevin
McGowan first and McGowan worked a perfect 7th with one strikeout.
Jamie Callahan took over for McGowan in the 8th and matched McGowan’s
effort with a perfect frame of his own (and he also finished with one strikeout).
Las
Vegas went down pretty quietly after the 4th, connecting on just a pair
of hits over the final five frames: John Mora singled in the 5th and
Travis Snider singled in the 9th.
Looking
ahead, the 51s still have a chance to force a split in this series, but only if
they win the next two games.
