Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies took a 6-3 defeat in their series opener with Akron
Monday night for their first loss of the season. Binghamton starter Marcos
Molina struggled to escape a long 4th that saw Akron take a 4-0 lead
and the Ponies couldn’t overcome that early deficit. Molina allowed three
straight weak RBI singles (two of which were infield singles) with two outs in
the 4th and that proved to be the difference in the game. The Ponies
lineup worked seven walks in addition to their seven hits, they just struggled
to get runners home in this one, especially with the bases loaded. As an aside, the MiLB.tv feed did a poor job showing the action in this one for some reason, so the highlights aren't all that great.
Molina
started his outing on fire, retiring the first six Akron batters on three
groundouts and three strikeouts. He allowed a leadoff double in the 3rd
and Akron’s third baseman Sam Haggerty got lucky on a pop up that landed fair
for a two-out RBI single to put the Ducks up 1-0. Then the 4th
inning started, and Molina’s defense wasn’t good to him after he allowed a
one-out single to Andrew Calica. Calica stole second and advanced to third when
Ponies shortstop Andrew Ely failed to catch the throw from Nido. Molina would
give up the three RBI singles with two outs later in the frame, including
back-to-back infield singles hit to the right side of the infield.
While
Molina was running into some poor luck over the first 4 innings, the Ponies
remained hitless until Peter Alonso came up to start the bottom of the 4th.
Alonso lined a single into CF but would be erased on a double play grounder
later in the frame.
After his previous two poor luck innings, Molina
came back out for the 5th and needed just seven pitches for a
perfect frame, striking out Haggerty for his fifth strikeout of the game along the way.
Binghamton
had a good chance to get some of those runs back in the 5th, but
left the bases loaded. Tim Tebow and Levi Michael connected on back-to-back
singles with two outs in the frame and then Champ Stuart worked a walk to load
them up, but Andrew Ely flew out to end the threat.
Adonis
Uceta was the first Binghamton reliever to come out of the pen Monday and he
worked a scoreless 6th with two strikeouts.
The
Ponies loaded the bases again in the 6th and this time with just one
out, but they still couldn’t get any runs home. Peter Alonso and Tomas Nido
worked walks ahead of a John Mora single to load them up, and then Jhoan Urena
and Tim Tebow both went down swinging to end the threat.
Gerson
Bautista took over for Uceta in the 7th and struck out five of six
batters faced over two perfect innings. Bautista’s first pitch clocked in at 98
MPH and he just kept bringing the heat. He’s up to eight strikeouts over his
first three innings of 2018, with zero walks issued and just one hit allowed.
Binghamton
finally broke through for a few runs when they loaded the bases up again in the
7th, but they came up one run short of tying the game, and they
still left the bases loaded to end the frame. Levi Michael sparked the rally
with a leadoff triple and eventually came home on a wild pitch. Ely, Alonso and
Patrick Mazeika worked three consecutive walks against Akron reliever Leandro
Linares, so the Ducks brought in David Speer to try and get control of the
inning. Speer cmae in and allowed back-to-back singles to Tomas Nido and John
Mora for two more Binghamton runs. The Ponies were still threatening with the
bases loaded and just one out, but then Jhoan Urena went down swinging and Tim
Tebow quickly found himself in a two-strike count. Tebow checked his swing on a
two-strike pitch in the dirt and that triggered Mazeika to break from third,
but the pitch was ruled a ball, so Maz had nowhere to go and was thrown out
trying to get back to third to end the threat. It was an unfortunate way to end
things, but Tebow was behind in that count and then ended up striking out to
start the 8th anyway, so it’s likely that didn’t make a big
difference in this game. (On the other hand, Tebow has a knack for big moments,
and that was the big moment).
With
their lead down to one-run, Akron was looking for insurance over the final two
innings and they got some against Austin McGeorge in the 9th.
McGeorge allowed a leadoff double and then a two-run homerun to Sicnarf Loopstok
with two outs in the frame, which made this a 6-3 game. As you may have noticed, that means all six Akron runs came with two outs in this one.
The
Ponies will look to get back to their winning ways Tuesday in game two of this
series. Joseph Shaw will make his 2018 debut and his second ever Double-A start
for Binghamton, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM.
