Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies had their four-game winning streak snapped Thursday at home
as they opened a four-game set with the Hickory Crawdads. Hickory scored ten
runs against Cola starter Tony Dibrell and never looked back in a 10-5 win,
which dropped the Fireflies record to 9-5. The Cola offense stayed on track but
couldn’t match the ten-run effort from Hickory. Eight of the nine Cola batters
reached base at least once, with catcher Scott Manea the only one missing out
on the on-base party – the first time in 8 starts that he’s failed to reach base
at least once. The Cola pen did a great job in relief of Dibrell, combining for
4.2 scoreless innings, but the Hickory pen nearly matched them zero-for-zero as
the Crawdads held onto their big lead.
Dibrell’s
struggles started instantly in this one, as he allowed a solo blast on his
third pitch of the game. He then gave up a single and committed a throwing
error before allowing a two-run double to Melvin Novoa. His struggles elicited
a visit from pitching coach Jonathan Hurst, who apparently came out with some
great advice for Dibrell. After the visit, Dibrell quickly struck out three of
the next four batters to escape the jam.
As
they’ve been doing a lot recently, the Fireflies answer right back with some
runs of their own in the next half inning. Edgardo Fermin led off the frame
with his first of two infield singles in the game, went to second on a Blake
Tiberi walk, and then came around to score on Matt Winaker’s first extra base
hit of the year (a double). Tiberi came home on a Jeremy Vasquez sac fly to
make it a 3-2 game, and it seemed like this game could be salvageable for
Columbia.
Unfortunately,
Dibrell ran into control problems when the 2nd inning started. He
walked the first two batters of the frame and eventually allowed another
two-RBI hit to Melvin Novoa in the frame – this time a single with two outs.
Dibrell did strikeout two more batters in the frame, but he trailed 5-2 when it
was over.
Dibrell
started the 3rd with back-to-back strikeouts and appeared to be
finally settling into this start, but then Chad Smith kept the inning alive
with a triple down the RF line and came home on a Yonny Hernandez single to
make it 6-2.
The
Fireflies answered back in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a pair of
extra base hits. Blake Tiberi stroked his fourth double of the year to center
field and then Jeremy Vasquez knocked him in again, this time with a triple to
left center field.
Dibrell
finally put together a scoreless frame in the 4th as he induced
three quick groundouts.
Rigoberto
Terrazas led off the Cola 4th with his fourth double of the year,
but the Fireflies couldn’t advance him in the frame.
Since
it appeared that Dibrell had settled into this start, he was allowed to go back
out for the 5th with a pitch count of 79, but that turned out to be
the wrong move for Cola Manager Pedro Lopez to make. Dibrell allowed four
straight extra base hits before inducing a pop out and exiting the game. Pedro
Gonzalez took him deep and then Ryan Dorow, Sam Huff, and Chad Smith strung
together three straight doubles for two additional runs. Smith came home with
Darwin Ramos on the mound, which pushed Dibrell’s runs allowed total to ten.
Although
they now trailed 10-3, the Fireflies showed they weren’t ready to give up as
they scratched out a run in the bottom of the 5th. Fermin started
the frame with a single, went to second on another Tiberi walk, and then came
home on a throwing error to make it 10-4.
Darwin
Ramos stayed out for the 6th and most of the 7th,
striking out two and working around some base runners to keep Hickory off the
scoreboard.
Rigo
led off the Cola 6th with a single and the Fireflies eventually
loaded the bases in the frame, but they couldn’t get a run in. Unfortunate
timing that the one time Hickory retired Blake Tiberi all night came with the
bases loaded and two outs in the 6th.
Cola
reliever Nicolas Debora took over for Ramos with two on and two outs in the 7th
and stuck around for 1.1 IP. He struck out Pedro Gonzalez to end the 7th
inning threat and then added two more strikeouts during a scoreless 8th.
The
Fireflies loaded the bases again in the 7th but still couldn’t cut
into the big deficit. Jeremy Vasquez singled for the only hit in the frame for
Columbia. Matt Winaker singled Blake Tiberi to second base with two outs in the
8th, but again Cola came up empty.
Trey
Cobb wrapped things up on the mound for Columbia with a 1-2-3 9th
inning, striking out two Crawdads along the way to push the Cola tally to 14
strikeouts for the night.
Columbia
finally turned one of their scoring opportunities into another run in the 9th,
but it was too little too late. Raphael Gladu doubled home Quinn Brodey with
two outs in the frame to make it a 10-5 game before it ended.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will try to bounce back Friday night in game two of this
series. Joe Cavallaro (1-0, 2.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Fireflies
opposite A.J. Alexy (0-0, 6.75 ERA), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
