Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies opened a weekend series by beating the Erie Sea Wolves 4-1 behind starter Nabil Crismatt Friday night. Crismatt bounced back from his last outing against Portland – when he allowed 11 base runners over 4+ innings and took a loss – to strikeout 9 Sea Wolves over six very strong innings. It’s the second time in three starts that Crismatt has finished with 9 strikeouts over six strong innings of work, and, in total, he’s at 21 K: 3 BB over 16 innings this season. Crismatt’s strong outing was supported by a big night from Patrick Mazeika, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, and strong performances out of the pen by Daniel Zamora and Tyler Bashlor, who finished with three strikeouts apiece over three scoreless innings.
Crismatt allowed an unearned run in the 1st after an error allowed Erie leadoff batter Jake Robson to reach second before an out was recorded. The Sea Wolves got him over and in on back-to-back sacrifices (a bunt and then a fly) to jump ahead 1-0 early. Crismatt then wrapped up the frame with his first strikeout of the game.

Mora in center field

K #1

John Mora singled for Binghamton in the bottom of the 1st, but it wasn't shown on the feed and he was erased on a Patrick Mazeika double play – the only time Mazeika was retired all night.
Crismatt pitched himself into trouble in the 2nd, issuing a walk and uncorking a wild pitch that put two runners in scoring position with just one out. Fortunately he struck out Josh Lester for out two and then fielded a comebacker to end the frame.

K #2

The Ponies rallied for two in the 2nd after Peter Alonso worked a leadoff walk. Alonso went to second on a Jeff McNeil single, up to third on a groundout, and then came home on a two-run single from Tim Tebow.

Robson doubled off Crismatt to start the Erie 3rd, but then Crismatt struck out three straight to strand him at second.

Mazeika’s single came in the bottom of the 3rd.

After hurting Crismatt in the 1st, the Ponies defense bailed him out big time in the 4th. Crismatt allowed hits to each of the first two batters – a single to Kade Scivicque and then a double to Gabriel Quintana – and the double nearly brought home a run, but a perfect relay throw from John Mora to Levi Michael to Mazeika nailed Scivicque at home. Crismatt then finished off the frame with another strikeout of Lester to strand Quintana at third.

K #6

Michael singled in the Ponies 4th.

Crismatt faced the minimum in the 5th thanks to a double play and then added a strikeout of Sergio Alcantara.

4-6-3 double play

K #7

Mazeika went deep in the 5th to make this a 3-1 game.

Crismatt then finished his outing with a perfect 6th, striking out Dominic Ficociello and Scivicque swinging back-to-back before heading to the dugout to watch the rest of the game from a more comfortable position.

K #9

Daniel Zamora took over for Crismatt in the 7th and struck out two in a perfect frame. He added another strikeout in the 8th, but left with a runner on first.
