Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies dropped their second straight in Portland and fifth
straight overall Saturday afternoon as their offense never showed up. It was
the second time in three games that the Ponies were shutout and they’ve managed
just three runs over their last four games, which is not a recipe for success.
Coming off a great
first start of the year, Ponies starter Nabil Crismatt allowed a lot of
base runners but limited the damage over four-plus innings of work. Just like
Friday night, the Binghamton starter limited the Portland offense enough that
he should’ve at least gotten a no-decision, but the Ponies offense just
couldn’t put any rallies together.
The
Ponies managed just three hits Saturday and one of them came from the first
batter of the game. Levi Michael led off the game with a single but was caught
stealing second base. Peter Alonso did the exact same thing in the 2nd,
leading off the frame with a single before getting caught stealing second base.
Ponies Manager Luis Rojas took the chance to send Alonso in the 2nd
because Patrick Mazeika was up and Mazeika has typically been a high contact
guy in his career. The final Ponies hit came when Tim Tebow led off the 6th
with a double to RF, but the Ponies stranded him at third in the frame.
Crismatt
allowed a single to four of the first five Portland batters but escaped the
inning down just 1-0 thanks to a double play. Double plays were a theme for the
Ponies defense early, as they turned four double plays over the first five
innings. The defense behind Crismatt allowed him to throw up three straight
zero’s between the 2nd and 4th inning, but he just wasn’t
at his sharpest in this one. He faced 20 batters and allowed 11 base runners,
including three in the 5th before he departed.
Eric
Hanhold took over for Crismatt with the bases loaded and one out in the 5th.
Unfortunately for both pitchers, Hanhold walked the first batter he saw, which
forced in a run that was charged to Crismatt. Fortunately, that was all
Portland could get off Hanhold, as he got the next batter to hit into an inning
ending double play. He stuck around for the 6th and struck out three
in a row to keep this a 2-0 game.
Hanhold
yielded to David Roseboom in the 7th and the BOOM struck out three
in his first inning back with Binghamton. After a mostly lost 2017, Roseboom
had some early season struggles in the 51s pen this year, so the Mets sent him
back to Binghamton, where he was one of the top pitchers in the 2016 B-Mets
pen.
Roseboom
was sent back out for the 8th and issued a leadoff walk, which
eventually came around for the Sea Dogs third run of the game. Roseboom retired
the two batters after the walk but wasn’t given the chance to strand his own
base runner. Instead, Josh Torres came out for his 2018 and Binghamton debut
with a runner on third and two outs. Torres would allow an RBI single before
ending the frame, which gave Portland the 3-0 lead that they won by.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies wrap up this series with Marcos Molina on the mound Sunday
and then they’ll head to New Hampshire to start a series with the Fisher Cats.
