Recapish
One
night after the Fireflies offense exploded for a season high eight runs in an
easy win over Hagerstown, the Suns offense came alive for a season high nine
runs for an easy win over Columbia. While nine runs is definitely a team
effort, the Suns have one player to thank for most of that offense: 19-year old
Juan Soto, the second best prospect in the Nationals system. Soto reached base
all five times he came to the plate, finished a triple shy of the cycle, hit a
434’ homerun (over an 18’ wall), smoked all three of his hits, scored twice and
knocked in six runs – he didn’t just steal the show, he was the show. Cola
starter Marcel Renteria came out of the gate strong in his first pro start
before running into control problems in the 3rd and then allowing a
two-run homerun (that knocked him out of the game) in the 5th.
Marcel
Renteria was the Mets 6th round pick in last year’s draft and is
known for his fastball, which was clocked as high as 99 MPH in college. His
fastball was sitting in the low-90’s during this one – per the Cola announcers
– and he mixed in a fair number of sliders and changeups, with most of his
pitches thrown down in the zone. All three of those pitches were getting
swinging strikes throughout the start, except for when he was struggling
through most of the 3rd.
Renteria
started his night by striking out a pair and working around a pair of base
runners over the first two innings.
After
his hot start, Scott Manea was bumped up to the cleanup spot in the lineup and
started his night with a single through the middle in the 2nd.
Renteria
came out wild to start the 3rd inning, hitting the first batter he
saw and throwing just five of his first thirteen pitches in the frame for
strikes. His problems were made worse after the HBP because Jay Jabs dropped
the ball on a sac bunt attempt, which put runners on the corners with no outs
for the heart of the Hagerstown lineup. Yasel Antuna followed with an RBI
double and then Juan Soto made this a 3-0 game with a two-run single through
the middle. After a quick mound visit from Jonathan Hurst, Renteria settled
down and quickly retired the next three batters, adding two more strikeouts to
his tally in the process.

Renteria
added a strikeout of Armond Upshaw during a scoreless 4th.
The
Fireflies worked some two out magic to get one of those runs back in the bottom
of the 4th. After Manea worked a walk, Quinn Brodey and Rigoberto
Terrazas followed with back-to-back singles to get him around and in for a run.
Renteria
then started the 5th with a strikeout before the duo of Antuna and
Soto struck again. Antuna worked a walk and Soto crushed his mammoth homerun to
center field to make this a 5-0 game.
Cannon
Chadwick took over at that point and finished the 5th with a
strikeout of Kameron Esthay.
The
Fireflies showed they still had some fight left in them in the bottom of the 5th
when they put together a two-run rally. Gio Alfonzo reached on an E6, went to
second on a Jay Jabs walk, up to third on a wild pitch, and then came home on a
Blake Tiberi single. After a pitching change, Matt Winaker came up and stroked
another RBI single to make this a 5-3 game. Unfortunately, that was about all
the fight the Cola bats had left in them, as they managed just one more hit the
rest of the way: a 9th inning single for Alfonzo that led to
nothing.
Chadwick
stuck around for the 6th and struck out Upshaw during a scoreless
frame.
He
gave way to Darwin Ramos in the 7th and Ramos’ early season
struggles continued over two long innings. Ramos struck out two of the first
three batters he saw, but he also walked two in the 7th, and both
walks came home on a two-run single off the bat of Esthay. Similarly, Ramos
retired two of the first three batters he faced in the 8th before
allowing a pair of two-out runs in the frame. This time it was Mr. Juan Soto
who provided the blow, smacking a two-run double into the right field corner to
make this a 9-3 game.
Carlos
Hernandez wrapped things up on the mound for Columbia with a scoreless 9th
in his season debut. The 23-year old Hernandez was one of the most effective
starters in the Kingsport rotation last year and is in his fifth season within
the Mets system. He struck out Esthay during a very quick inning.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will try to avoid falling below .500 Wednesday night in
the rubber match of this series. Tony Dibrell (0-0 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to
take the hill for his second start of 2018, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05
PM.
