Recapish
The
Rumble Ponies overcame an early deficit to beat the Erie Sea Wolves for a
second straight night Saturday in Binghamton. After starting the season with
Las Vegas, Mickey Jannis made his first Double-A start of the year and was
effective enough over his 5+ innings of work to earn the win. He allowed two
runs in the 2nd as the Ponies fell behind early, but then Binghamton
scored four unanswered runs to take control of this game, and they went on to
win 4-2.
Jannis
started his outing with a perfect 1st, striking out Kenny Wilson
along the way. He then allowed a hit to each of the first three Erie batters in
the 2nd as they jumped ahead 2-0. Herlis Rodriguez had the big hit
for Erie in the frame, connecting on an RBI double for the games first run. Jannis
then induced three straight groundouts to end the frame, but a second run came
home on one of them.
Jhoan
Urena had the Ponies first hit when he singled with two outs in the 2nd.
Jannis
issued a leadoff walk in the 3rd, but then struck out Sergio
Alcantara and induced a double play grounder to escape the frame.
The
Ponies got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Levi Michael
launched a solo blast, his first homer of the year. John Mora singled later in
the frame and the Binghamton evened the score on a double play grounder.
Jeff
McNeil tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the 4th, which gave
Binghamton a 3-2 lead. Urena singled again later in the frame.
Jannis’
final outs of the night came during a scoreless 5th. He struck out
one in the frame and worked around a walk, an error, and a passed ball to
strand the tying run at third.
Austin
McGeorge took over for Jannis with a runner on an nobody out in the 6th
and quickly escaped the jam. A caught stealing for Patrick Mazeika eliminated
the base runner, and then McGeorge struck out Jake Rogers to end the frame.
Mazeika
led off the Ponies 6th with a surprise bunt single, but Binghamton couldn’t add
any insurance runs in the frame.
McGeorge
started the 7th but was replaced by David Roseboom with one out and
a runner on second base. The BOOM stranded that baserunner and finished the
frame with Binghamton still up 3-2.
The
Ponies finally added some insurance in the bottom of the 7th after
an E4 from Erie. Levi Michael reached on the error, went to second on a Kevin
Taylor single, and then scored on another single from Mora.
Eric
Hanhold took over on the mound for Binghamton in the 8th and wrapped
up the 4-2 win. Hanhold struck out a pair over two scoreless frames to earn his
first save of the year.
It
didn’t lead to any runs, but Matt Oberste started the Ponies 8th
with a double, his first of the season.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies have a chance to sweep Erie Sunday. Michael Gibbons will get
called up to make the start in place of Marcos Molina, who is headed to Las
Vegas to make his Triple-A debut.
