Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s picked up their second win of the season Thursday afternoon in
Albuquerque, avoiding a sweep with an offensive outburst for the second
straight game. This time the 51s pitchers kept the Isotopes batters in check,
which led Las Vegas to an easy 10-3 win. Starter Chris Flexen performed much better
in this outing than in his first and Ty Kelly was still on fire from Wednesday
night's game, providing three runs batted in and three runs scored. Zach
Borenstein also stayed hot in Albuquerque and Brandon Nimmo had a multi-hit
game in his first start for Las Vegas this year (and possibly his last one for
awhile).
Just
like Wednesday night, the 51s started hot with a multi-run 1st. Ty
Kelly tripled for the second straight game and then Zach Borenstein followed
with a two-run blast, his second homer in as many days.
Chris
Flexen took the mound with a 2-0 lead and quickly struck out the first two
batters of the game during a perfect 1st. Flexen's job was made a
little easier after Raimel Tapia took exception to the third strike call
against him and he was ejected while walking back to the dugout.
Gavin
Cecchini doubled for the fourth time already in 2018 during the top of the 2nd.
Flexen
started the bottom of the 2nd with another strikeout, but then
Derrik Gibson tripled for the Isotopes first hit. Gibson came home on a single
two batters later to make this a 2-1 game.
The
51s were all about the 2-spot Thursday, scoring two runs in five different
innings. That's what happed in the 3rd, and this weird mini-rally
was started with a Borenstein double. Phil Evans singled Borenstein (ZB) to
third, but then ZB was thrown out trying to score on a grounder to third. It
was up to Luis Guillorme with two outs and runners on the corners, and he
struck out in his at bat, but not before both runners came home to make it a
4-1 game. Despite a 1-2 count on Guillorme, the Isotopes pitcher was more
interested in Evans on second and they should've had him picked off. Evans was
caught too far off the bag, so he took off for third and the throw beat him,
but Gibson could not hold onto the ball, which allowed Evans to come home.
Thompson advanced to second on that play, then took off to steal third on the
next pitch and came home when Gibson couldn't hold onto the catcher's throw.
Now
working with a 4-1 lead, Flexen put three straight zero's up on the board,
striking out two more Isotopes along the way.
Las
Vegas struck again in the 5th thanks to another Ty Kelly homer. He
went deep after Nimmo singled, which made this a 6-1 game.
Luis
Guillorme sparked the 6th inning rally with a leadoff single, went
to second on a Gavin Cecchini single, and then came around to score on Colton
Plaia's first double of the year. Nimmo came through with an RBI single two
batters later to make it 8-1.
Flexen
ran into two out trouble in the 6th after Gibson kept the inning
alive with a single. Josh Fuentes tripled Gibson home before Flexen could
finish the frame, but Flexen still made it through 6 innings and left with an
8-2 lead, which is always a good day's work.
David
Thompson singled for his hit in the 7th, but any potential rally in the frame was cut short
by a double play grounder.
Matt
Purke faced the minimum in the 7th thanks to a double play grounder.
Kelly
knocked in Nimmo again in the 8th, this time on his second triple of
the game. Kelly came home on an RBI groundout from ZB one batter later.
Jamie
Callahan took over for Purke in the 8th and wrapped things up for
Las Vegas. It wasn't a clean outing - he did allow a 9th inning run -
but hopefully he can build off of it and get back to the success he was having
last year soon.
Looking
ahead, the 51s travel to El Paso to start a weekend series with El Paso (5-3).
P.J. Conlon (0-0, 1.50 ERA) is the listed starter for Las Vegas and first pitch
is scheduled for 9:05 PM on the east coast.
