Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies got a top-notch performance from big Chris Viall Monday
night in Greenville as they cruised to a 7-1 win in the opener of their series
with the Drive. Viall set a career-high with 11 strikeouts over five innings of
work and barely let the Drive hit the ball out of the infield. He randomly
experienced some control problems in the 4th as the Drive tried to
put together a rally, but then Viall buckled down and struck out five of six
batters to end his night on a high note. Edgardo Fermin led the Fireflies
offensively, finishing with three hits, three runs scored, a double, a stolen
base, and his second walk of the season. Although Fermin had the biggest night,
everyone in the Fireflies lineup reached base at least once, and the team as a
whole walked more times (8) than they struck out (7).
Edgardo
Fermin started his big night and the game with a 1st inning single
through the right side. After a walk and a double play grounder, Fermin found
himself at third with two outs and it looked like the Fireflies would waste
their first scoring opportunity of the night. However, Drive starter Alex
Scherff uncorked a wild pitch and Fermin came home to make it a 1-0 game.
Chris
Viall started his big night with three strikeouts in the 1st while
working around a two out infield single. The first pitch he threw in the 2nd
led to a grounder that was booted by Blake Tiberi at second base, but he struck
out two more in the frame while working around that error.
Fermin
smacked a double leading off the 3rd, but the Fireflies couldn’t
advance him at all in the frame.
Viall
kept his strong outing going with a 1-2-3 3rd inning, inducing a
pair of groundouts and striking out Frankie Rios for his sixth strikeout.
Rigoberto
Terrazas singled in the 4th but he was erased on a double play
grounder in the frame.
After
three dominant innings to start his night, Viall came out wild to start the 4th.
He walked three of the first five batters in the frame as the Drive tied the
game at one. It looked like his great start was going to get away from him, but
then pitching coach Jonathan Hurst came out to make a visit and suddenly he was
fixed. With the bases juiced and just one out, Viall struck out Victor Acosta
and Samuel Miranda back-to-back to end the threat.
The
way Viall ended things gave the Fireflies some momentum heading into the 5th
and they rode it for a three-run inning. Scott Manea worked a walk to start the
frame and then came around to score on a Jay Jabs triple. Jabs came home on a
passed ball later in the frame, and then Fermin came home a little later on a
Quinn Brodey RBI groundout to make this a 4-1 game.
Viall
issued another walk leading off the bottom of the 5th and that
runner eventually worked his way to third base, but Viall paid him no mind. Instead,
Viall focused on the three batters who came up after the walk, striking out all
three to push his total to eleven for the night.
Darwin
Ramos took over for Viall in the 6th and struck out three over two
scoreless innings. Ramos ran into some 7th inning trouble but was
helped out by an unusual 9-4-3-6 double play – I honestly don’t know what the
Greenville runner is thinking on the play.
Brodey
started the Cola 8th by showing off his speed on a triple, and then
he was able to walk home when Walter Rasquin launched a two-run blast over the
mini-monster.
The
Fireflies added one last run in the 9th thanks to three straight
hits. Fermin led off with his third hit of the game, went to third on Gio
Alfonzo’s second double of the year – Alfonzo took over for Blake Tiberi at
second base midgame – and then came home on a Matt Winaker RBI single to make
it 7-1.
Carlos
Hernandez wrapped things up on the mound for Columbia with two scoreless
innings. He struck out three to push the Fireflies total to 17 for the game,
which matched the franchise record. It’s early, but Hernandez looks like he can
be a nice weapon out of the Fireflies pen this year, as he’s up to 7 K: 1 BB
over 4 IP with just one single allowed.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will try to improve to 8-4 Tuesday night in game two of
this series. Marcel Renteria (0-1, 8.31 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for
Columbia, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
