Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies dropped the second game of their now three-game series
in New Hampshire 5-4 to the Fisher Cats Wednesday night. Ponies starter Joe Shaw
did a solid job against one of the better lineups in minor league ball, but he
couldn’t close out the 6th and the Fisher Cats took advantage for a
three-run lead that proved to be just enough for the win. The 6th
proved to be the key inning in this one, as the Rumble Ponies put two on the
board to tie it in the top half only to see the Cats jump back ahead.
Binghamton had a good chance to at least tie things up in the 9th,
but they couldn’t come through with a big hit after loading the bases to start
the frame.
Shaw
did allow seven hits in this one, but all seven were singles and he walked no
one, which allowed him to limit the damage over the first five innings. He
allowed a two out single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the 1st, but
then picked him off to end the frame.
The
Fisher Cats then jumped ahead 1-0 in the 2nd on just a pair of
singles. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led off the frame with a single, went to second on
a groundout to third, and then came home on a Harold Ramirez RBI single. Shaw
ended the frame with his first strikeout of the game.
The
Ponies first hit came when Levi Michael singled with two outs in the 3rd,
but he was picked off to end the frame.
A
throwing error opened the door for another Cats run in the 3rd.
Jonathan Davis singled and stole second, then went to third on an E5 before
coming home on a sac fly.
John
Mora singled for Binghamton in the top of the 4th and made it to
third with nobody out, but the heart of the Ponies lineup couldn’t get him
home.
Shaw
struck out the first two batters in the 4th and ended up facing the
minimum in the inning when Patrick Mazeika caught Andrew Guillotte trying to
steal second base.
Andrew
Ely and Tim Tebow connected on back-to-back two out singles in the 5th,
but still the Ponies couldn’t get a run home.
Mazeika
threw Patrick Cantwell out trying to steal second in the 5th, which
helped Shaw face the minimum for a second straight inning.
Mora
led off another frame with a single in the 6th and this time the
Ponies knocked him in from first. Peter Alonso followed with an RBI double to
knock Mora in; it was Alonso’s fourth double of the year. Mazeika followed with
a single to advance Alonso to third and then Matt Oberste brought him home with
a sac fly.
Shaw’s
outing came to an end with two on and two outs in the 6th. He had
hit Vladito earlier in the frame and then Juan Kelly kept the inning alive with
an infield single. Johnny Magliozzi took over and immediately loaded the bases
with the second HBP of the frame. Mags then walked Guillotte to force home a
run and allowed a two-run single to Gunnar Heidt before finally escaping the
jam down 5-2.
Another
Ponies error and a Vladito double had the Fisher Cats threatening to add on in
the 7th, but Joshua Torres took over with two outs and the bases
loaded and struck out Ramirez to end the threat. Torres stuck around for the 8th
and struck out two more during a scoreless frame.
The
Ponies were down but wouldn’t give up in the 9th, putting together a
mini-rally that came up just short of a tie. Andrew Ely started the frame with
a single, went to second on a walk, and then up to third on a Kevin Taylor
single. With nobody out and the bases loaded, leadoff man John Mora popped into
an infield fly rule for out number one. Alonso was due up next and he brought a
run home, but at the cost of an out as he hit a sac fly. With the game on the
line, Mazeika kept things going for one more batter by singling home Tebow to
make it a one-run game. Unfortunately, Matt Oberste couldn’t complete the
comeback for Binghamton, as Craig Breslow set him down swinging to end the
game.
Looking
ahead, these two teams wrap up this series with a rubber-match scheduled for
10:30 AM on Thursday. Andrew Church is scheduled to make the start for
Binghamton opposite Jordan Romano.
