Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies won their third straight Sunday to wrap up an opening series sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs. Rumble Ponies starter Nabil Crismatt was dominant in this outing, allowing just a leadoff double in the 1st and striking out nine Sea Dogs batters (against zero walks) in his 2018 debut. Peter Alonso had another big day at the plate for Binghamton, stroking two more extra base hits, including another long bomb. John Mora also went deep in this one, stroking his first home of the season as part of a multi-hit game. Daniel Zamora and Drew Smith weren’t perfect out of the Ponies pen but they held onto the lead for a 4-3 Binghamton win in their season debuts.
Nabil Crismatt is a relatively unknown prospect in the system with real Major League upside. He doesn’t overpower hitters with velocity, but he has a solid four-pitch mix and is creative on the mound, which helped him lead the FSL with 142 strikeouts in 145.2 IP last year. The one time I could see his stuff on MiLB.tv was in 2016 and the stuff reminded me of former Mets prospect John Gant: average velocity that creeps up occasionally, a big slow curve (will clock in below 70 MPH), and a potentially plus changeup with good velocity separation from his fastball. Crismatt added a slider before last season and it gave him another outpitch and a different look to throw at hitters.
Crismatt allowed a double to the first batter he saw Sunday but then settled down and retired 13 straight and 18 of the next 19 Sea Dogs batters. It took an E6 to disrupt his streak, and Crismatt responded to the error with back-to-back strikeouts.

While Crismatt was cruising, the Rumble Ponies built up a 3-0 lead. Tomas Nido connected on the first Ponies hit when he singled leading off the 2nd. Kevin Taylor singled Nido to second base, both runners advanced on a fly out, and then Nido came home on a John Mora groundout to make this a 1-0 game.

Andrew Ely connected on a single for Binghamton with snow coming down hard in the 3rd, but the Ponies couldn’t take advantage of the crazy weather and an E4 in the frame for any runs.

It was coming down pretty hard

Mora connected on his blast with two outs in the 4th to make this a 2-0 game.

Alonso connected on a two out double in the Ponies 5th, but Yankory Pimentel came in and stranded him at second base.

Champ Stuart came into the game as a pinch-runner after Kevin Taylor worked a walk in the 6th, stole second, went to third on a throwing error, and then came home on a Jhoan Urena sac fly. Mora followed with a single, which led to nothing in the 6th, but gave Pete Alonso a chance to face Pimentel in the 7th, and Alonso took Yankory P deep to make it 4-0.

Alonso

Daniel Zamora took over for Crismatt in the top of the 7th and work around a walk for a scoreless frame. He stayed out for the 8th and his second inning of work did not go so well – that seemed to be a theme for Mets minors relievers on Sunday. The Sea Dogs combined for three doubles in the 8th as they put a three-spot on the board. The final two runs came home with Drew Smith on the mound before he finally ended the frame with a strikeout of Luke Tendler.

Tomas Nido singled and made it to second base in the bottom of the 8th, but the Ponies couldn’t add any insurance runs in the frame.

Smith stayed in the game to work the 9th and struck out two during a perfect frame to seal the deal and earn his first save of 2018.

After a very successful opening series, the Rumble Ponies welcome the Akron Rubber Ducks to town Monday night for a three-game set. Marcos Molina is scheduled to make his first start of 2018, with first-pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM.
