Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s took the opener of a four-game set in El Paso 7-1 Friday night
behind a great performance from starter Corey Oswalt. The 51s gave Oswalt an
early lead and he gave the team a much better performance than in his first
start against El Paso on opening day. After a few huge games in Albuquerque, Ty
Kelly stayed hot in this one with a two-hit, two-RBI, one-double performance.
David Thompson also kept heating up at the plate and is now 6 for his last 13
after starting the season in a 2-14 rut. With the win, Las Vegas has its first
mini ‘winning streak’ of the 2018 season.
Kelly
got the offense going with a 1st inning double. Bryce Brentz singled
him home three batters later and then David Thompson followed with an RBI
single of his own to make this a 2-0 game.
Corey
Oswalt then went out for the bottom of the 1st and started his good
night with a strikeout of Luis Urias. He worked around a leadoff single in the
2nd, which would be the only hit against him. Oswalt also struck out
Allen Craig and Stephen McGee in the 2nd, and then struck out Chris
Huffman and Nick Schulz while working around an error in the 3rd.
Oswalt’s final two frames went 6 up, 6 down, and he added a strikeout of Javy
Guerra in the 4th and then Dusty Coleman in the 5th to
finish with 7.
The
51s bats went quiet for a few innings after the 1st. David Thompson
reached on a single in the 4th but was doubled off to end the frame.
Colton Plaia doubled and came home in the 5th to give Oswalt a 3-0
lead before he departed. Plaia moved up to third base on a sac bunt from Oswalt
and then came home on a wild pitch.
Zach
Borenstein doubled for Las Vegas in the 6th but would be stranded at
third base.
Corey
Taylor took over for Oswalt in the bottom of the 6th and started his
PCL career with a strikeout of Travis Jankowski and a 1-2-3 inning. Taylor then
struck out Craig and McGee in the 7th, so Manager Tony DeFrancesco
tried to get a third inning out of him. Unfortunately for Taylor, Dusty Coleman
greeted him with a doule in the 8th and came around to score with
another pitcher on the mound.
Kyle
Regnault took over for and induced three groundouts to end the frame, but those
groundouts were enough to get Coleman over and in.
The
51s responded to the first El Paso run with a big 9th inning. Bryce
Brentz sparked the rally with a single through the right side and was then replaced
on the bases by Patrick Biondi. Biondi stole second, went to third on a
groundout, and came home on a Gavin Cecchini RBI single. Matthew den Dekker and
Ty Kelly then connected on back-to-back run scoring singles later in the frame
to push the 51s lead to 7-1.
With
this game now effectively a laugher – never totally the case when in the PCL – Logan
Taylor came out for the 9th and wrapped things up. He struck out
Schulz in the frame and then the game ended on a 6-4-3 double play.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will look to make it three straight wins Saturday night behind
P.J. Conlon.
