Recapish
The
St. Lucie Mets lost a rain-soaked affair Saturday evening in Bradenton to fall
under .500 for the first time in 2018. Mets starter Gabriel Llanes struggled in
the 1st and then a long rain delay kept him from going deeper into
the game. The St. Lucie pen was great over seven innings of relief, but the 1st
inning deficit proved too big for the Mets bats to overcome. Two current Mets
prospects went deep in this game – Ian Strom and Dash Winningham – but it was
the former Mets prospects’ (Alfredo Reyes) homer that made the difference.
Top
Mets prospect Andres Gimenez singled in the 1st for his hit of the
game, but then Desmond Lindsay followed by grounding into an inning ending
double play.
Gabriel
Llanes’ struggles started with the first batter of the game, who smashed a
double to left field against him and came around to score soon after that. Llanes
had a chance to escape the 1st with just one run allowed, but then Alfredo
Reyes launched a three-run bomb to right center field to make this a 4-0 game.
The rain delay started as soon as the frame ended, or about five minutes too
late for Llanes and the Mets in this one.
Mike
Wallace took over for Bradenton after the rain delay and he was huge for the
Marauders. Wallace allowed just one run over five strong innings of work,
bridging the gap between the Bradenton starter and the rest of the pen.
Joseph
Zanghi took over for St. Lucie and he was also very effective, but he was
limited to 2.2 innings of work (aka, a pitch count of about 40). Zanghi struck
out three and allowed just a single during his scoreless outing. Between the
Bradenton and St. Lucie announcers, it sounded like he was sitting around 93-94
(t-95) MPH with his heater and 86-88 MPH with his slider.
Desmond
Lindsay connected on the next St. Lucie hit in the 4th, and the Dash
Winningham and Michael Paez added singles in the 5th, but neither
opportunity led to any runs for St. Lucie.
Matt
Pobereyko took over for Zanghi with two outs in the 4th and finished
the frame with a strikeout. Pobereyko allowed a run on two walks, a single, a
stolen base, and a sac fly in the 5th, but then bounced back for a
scoreless 6th. Neither Zanghi or Pobereyko went as long as Wallace,
but together they combined to allow just one run over five innings, just like
Wallace.
Jacob
Zanon sparked the first Mets run of the game with a leadoff double in the 6th,
his third already of 2018. Zanon went to third on a groundout and then came
home on a Brandon Brosher sac fly to make this a 5-1 game.
The
Mets added another run in the 7th thanks to an Ian Strom bomb, his
first of 2018 after stroking four last season.
Ryder
Ryan and Matt Blackham held Bradenton scoreless over the 7th and 8th
innings. Both finished with one strikeout and were aided by a caught stealing.
St.
Lucie added one last run in the 9th thanks to Dash Winningham, who
launched his second homer of the season to make this a 5-3 final.
Looking
ahead, St. Lucie will hand the ball to Harol Gonzalez in the finale of this
4-game, home-and-away series with Bradenton needing a win to split. After the
pen went seven innings in this game, the Mets will be looking to get some depth
from Harol regardless of how effective he is.
