Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s jumped ahead big early in El Paso Saturday night only to be rudely reminded that no lead is safe in the PCL, as the Chihuahuas came back from down seven to take an 11-7 win over the 51s in game two of this four game set. 51s starter P.J. Conlon was perfect over the first two innings while his teammates built up a 7-0 lead, but then El Paso started smacking him around in the 3rd and knocked him out in the 4th. It was as if someone turned a switch that controlled offense before the 3rd inning after accidentally leaving it pointing at the 51s over the first two innings. The 51s bats went quiet after the 2nd and El Paso exploded for eleven runs against three 51s pitchers over the next four innings.
The first four Las Vegas batters of the game reached safely on three singles and walk, which gave the 51s a 1-0 lead and put them in a bases loaded, nobody out situation. They almost didn’t add on thanks to back-to-back strikeouts, but then Luis Guillorme connected on a two-run single to make this a 3-0 game.

As I mentioned, P.J. Conlon was sharp over the first two innings, striking out a pair while allowing zero base runners.

Borenstein in RF

Conlon sparked the 51s 2nd inning rally with a leadoff single through the middle. Dom Smith came up three batters later with the bases loaded and brought home two with another Las Vegas single to center field. Lefty Zach Borenstein followed with a two-run double, which put the 51s up 7-0 and seemingly in control of this game.

Ty Kelly singled against a new El Paso pitcher in the 3rd, but the Chihuahuas staff was done giving up runs for the night.

The whole tone of this game changed in the 3rd when El Paso put up a four run inning and it all started with a leadoff triple from Javy Guerra. Guerra quickly came home on a single and two outs later it looked like that was all El Paso would get in the frame. But then Conlon walked Travis Jankowski, which kept the inning alive for the heart of El Paso’s lineup. Franmil Reyes and Nick Schulz followed with back-to-back run scoring hits to make this a 7-4 game before Conlon could finally escape the jam with a strikeout.

Phil Evans connected on a two out single in the top of the 4th for Las Vegas.

The bottom of the 4th inning was a mess, but P.J. Conlon might’ve made it through the frame with a lead if not for a pair of errors behind him. Conlon allowed three straight hits to start the frame, including an RBI triple to Javy Guerra. With two runs in and a runner on first, El Paso was willing to trade an out (via bunt) in order to advance the runner. Unfortunately, Colton Plaia made a throwing error after fielding the bunt, so everyone was safe. After Conlon finally got the first out of the frame, the tying run came home on a rare error from shortstop Luis Guillorme, which led to Conlon’s departure. Had both those errors been converted into outs, Conlon would’ve escaped the frame with a 7-6 lead and handed things off to his bullpen. But they didn’t, so Kevin McGowan took over for Conlon and ended the frame in a 7-7 tie.

Guerra

1-2-3 double play

McGowan was able to clean up Conlon’s mess but then ran into his own mess in the 5th. He allowed a double and two-out RBI single, which gave El Paso their first lead.

Matt Purke took over in the 6th and his early season struggles continued. Purke did strikeout a pair in the frame, but allowed three runs in between those strikeouts, which gave El Paso the 11-7 lead they won by.

Colton Plaia and Zach Borenstein each added a single for Las Vegas over the final three innings, but neither made it beyond first base.

Tim Peterson took over for Purke in the 7th and struck out the side.

Drew Smith took over for Peterson in the 8th and worked around two out trouble for a scoreless frame.

Looking ahead, the 51s will give the ball to Mickey Jannis Sunday as they look to gain a 2-1 edge in this four game set.
