Recapish
After
a rainout Friday night, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies got back to their winning
ways Saturday against the Sea Dogs. Rumble Ponies starter Andrew Church was
generally effective, though not really efficient, in his first start of the
year, faring much better than he did in his one previous Double-A start (when
he allowed 10 earned runs). Church was backed by three big doubles and a very
effective Binghamton bullpen en route to a 5-3 win for the Ponies. Peter Alonso
had one of those doubles and Tomas Nido had the other two, along with 3 RBI’s
for his biggest game so far in 2018. Eric Hanhold got the win in his Mets
organizational debut and Corey Taylor earned the save in his first opportunity
of 2018.
Andrew
Church struck out two during a scoreless 1st inning, but it took him
26 pitches to do so, which is problematic when you’re on an early season pitch
limit of about 80. He only needed 10 pitches in the 2nd, but he
allowed a solo blast to Josh Tobias in the frame, which gave Portland an early
1-0 lead.
Tomas
Nido started the bottom of the 2nd with his first double of the
game, and then came around to score the tying run on a Jhoan Urena RBI single
two batters later.
Church
had another long inning by pitch count in the 3rd, requiring 20
pitches to get through the frame. He struck out three during the inning, but
allowed another solo blast – this time to Esteban Quiroz – that put Portland up
2-1. After a scoreless 4th, Church ran into trouble in the 5th,
which led to his early hook.
Eric
Hanhold took over for Church with two runners in scoring position and just one
out in the 5th. The first batter he faced hit a grounder right at
Alonso, which froze the runner at third while the second out was record.
Hanhold then got an inning ending groundout to escape the jam unscored upon. Per Alex Rosen at BPMets, Hanhold was sitting 94-96 MPH with his fastball - topping at 99 MPH - and his slider was in the 87-89 MPH range.
After
Portland failed to take advantage of a big scoring opportunity in the top of
the 5th, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies erupted for four runs in the
bottom half of the frame to take control of this game. Levi Michael sparked the
rally with a one out single, went to second when Champ Stuart worked a walk, to
third on a groundout, and then came home on Peter Alonso’s double. After a
pitching change and a HBP, Nido came up with the bases loaded and smacked a
bases clearing double to make this a 5-2 game.
After
a perfect 6th from Hanhold, Bashlor took over and worked two perfect
innings of his own, bookending a pair of strikeouts along the way. Alonso singled
for the Ponies final hit of the game in the 7th, but the offense was
otherwise quiet.
With
a 5-2 lead, Luis Rojas went to Corey Taylor to close things out and he stumbled
a little before sealing the deal. Taylor issued a leadoff walk, which is always
trouble, and that runner came around to make this a 5-3 game. Fortunately for
the Ponies, Taylor then buckled down and struck out Austin Rei before inducing
a game-ending groundout.
The
Ponies will hand the ball to Nabil Crismatt Sunday as they look to complete a
sweep in this rain-shortened series with Portland. It’s Crismatt’s first start
of the year but his second career Double-A start, as he went six strong innings
(5 H, 1 R, 7 K: 1 BB) in a start for Binghamton back in September
2016.
