Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies won their second straight in Greenville Tuesday night, scoring 7 runs for a second straight game to top the Drive 7-5. Cola starter Marcel Renteria struck out a career-high seven batters over 5.1 IP (also a career-high) while issuing just one walk to earn the win. Greenville battled back some against the Cola pen late, but the Fireflies held on to improve to 8-4 this year. Offensively, Cola batter reached base at least once for the second straight, plus Blake Tiberi, Quinn Brodey, and Giovanny Alfonzo had multi-hit efforts.
Marcel Renteria started his good outing with a strikeout of Kervin Suarez and then worked around a two-out double in the 1st.

The Fireflies jumped ahead 1-0 in the 2nd and started a streak of six straight innings with at least one run scored. Quinn Brodey tripled for the second straight game and then came home on a Rigoberto Terrazas single for the run.

Renteria struck out Marino Campana during a perfect 2nd and then tallied two more strikeouts in the 3rd.

Giovanny Alfonzo started the Cola 3rd with a double, went to third on an Edgardo Fermin single, and then came home on a Blake Tiberi RBI single. Jeremy Vasquez brought home a second run in the frame with a sac fly.

Alfonzo doubled again in the Cola 4th and this time brought home a run to make it 4-0.

Renteria started the bottom of the 4th with another strikeout, but then C.J. Chatham sparked a Greenville rally with a double. Campana singled Chatham home two batters later and then came home on a Victor Acosta double.

Blake Tiberi doubled for Columbia to start the 5th and came home when Quinn Brodey hit into a force out. Scott Manea made it 6-2 with a solo blast in the 6th. Manea has already matched his XBH totals from 2017 (3 2B, 1 HR) in just 7 games played this year – 30 fewer than he played in last year.

Renteria bounced back with a perfect 5th, striking out his final two batters of the night in the frame. He was allowed to start the 6th but left two barters in, with Chatham on first and one out. Nicolas Debora took over and eventually finished the frame with a strikeout. His inning was made easier when Scott Manea threw Chatham out trying to steal second.

Jeremy Vasquez kept the Cola 7th alive with his third double of the year and then came home on a Quinn Brodey RBI single to give the Fireflies their biggest lead at 7-2.

The Drive strung together three straight singles for a run off Debora in the 7th and a fourth later in the frame to make it 7-4. Debora struck out Suarez before allowing that final hit, and then Joshua Payne took over after it. Payne struck out Everlouis Lozada to end the Drive rally.

Raphael Gladu started the Cola 8th with a single but the Drive finally kept the Fireflies off the board in the frame.

Payne nearly made it through the 8th unscored upon, but then an Edgardo Fermin error with two outs kept the inning alive and led to an unearned run. Stephen Villines took over for Payne with two outs in the 8th and retired the final four Drive batters of the game, striking out the side in the 9th to seal the Cola win.
