Recapish

The Columbia Fireflies took a 4-1 loss to the Hickory Crawdads Saturday evening in South Carolina, which has them at a 2-1 disadvantage in this four game set. The Fireflies offense entered the game as arguably the best in the SAL but was held to just 1 run on 3 hits by three Hickory pitchers. Cola starter Jake Simon was very good over his first 4+ innings of work but then ran into two out trouble in the 5th, allowing three runs on three straight hits, including a two-run homer from Melvin Nova. That proved to be the difference in this game, as both pens were strong over the final four innings. As an aside, there was no gameday log for this game and I didn’t have time to make one, so no pitch count information is available, official or unofficial.
Jake Simon has been a tough luck loser in each of his three starts this year, as he’s allowed just 6 ER over 16 IP but he hasn’t thrown a pitch with the Fireflies on the scoreboard yet. Simon has been significantly better than in 2017, when he struggled both in the rotation and out of the pen for Brooklyn. He limited Hickory to three singles and a pair of walks over the first four innings, tallying three of his four strikeouts while he was cruising.

Simon was dealing over the first four innings but Hickory starter Jean Casanova was even better during that span, holding the Fireflies hitless as the game moved to the 5th.
Hickory outfielder Miguel Aparacio kept the 5th inning alive with a two out single to right field, and that was enough to temporarily open the floodgates for the Crawdads. Yohel Pozo followed with an RBI double and then Novoa connected on his homerun to make it a 3-0 game. I thought it was impressive that, despite suddenly allowing three runs on three straight hits, Simon didn’t need a mound visit before the next batter came up, and then he quickly struck out Pedro Gonzalez swinging to end his frame. He was able to put those previous mistakes aside and focus on the batter in front of him, instead of letting that homerun get to him and then letting the inning get away from him.

Ali Sanchez singled in the Cola 5th, but he was caught trying to steal second base. The caught stealing was especially unfortunate because Scott Manea teed off for a solo blast shortly after Sanchez was caught. Manea’s homer traveled an estimated 415 feet and had an exit velocity of 106 MPH, so it was a bomb.

Aaron Ford made his season debut in the 6th and worked a perfect frame with a strikeout of Tyler Ratliff. Ford is taking the place of Cannon Chadwick, who retired unexpectedly last week. Ford stuck around for the 7th and faced the minimum in the frame thanks to a pickoff.

The final Cola hit came when Blake Tiberi singled in the 6th.

Nicolas Debora took over for Ford in the 8th and threw a scoreless frame. He stuck around for the 9th but had to be relieved after allowing a run on a pair of doubles. He did strikeout Miguel Aparicio before leaving, and then Carlos Hernandez came in and ended the inning.

Looking ahead, the Fireflies will try to force a series split Sunday behind Anthony Kay.
