Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s were shutout and took a 10-0 beating in the third game of their
series with El Paso Sunday afternoon. 51s starter Mickey Jannis was better than
in his first outing, but he still left down 3-0 after just four innings.
Reliever Logan Taylor took over for Jannis and was smacked around over his two
innings of work, which left Las Vegas down 10-0 after six innings. Meanwhile,
El Paso starter Eric Lauer tossed one of the best outings of his pro career,
finishing with 10 strikeouts over six scoreless innings while allowing just
three hits (I’ve included a GIF of each punch out below).
After
Lauer struck out the first two batters of the game, Dom Smith greeted him with
a double – Smith’s fifth of the year – but never made it off second base. Lauer
finished the frame with another strikeout.
Jannis
has been a little extra knuckleball-heavy early in the season even though he
hasn’t had great control of the pitch yet. Jannis is generally about 70%
knuckleballs, but both announcers suggested he’s been using the knuckler even
more frequently than that in his first two starts – both of which came against
El Paso.
Jannis
hit the first batter in the 1st, issued a walk two batters later and
both runners eventually came round to score.
Colton
Plaia connected on a two out single in the 51s 2nd, but obviously
Las Vegas never got anyone home in this game. Lauer’s K total reached four with
one more in the frame.
Jannis
induced four weak grounders in the 2nd for a scoreless frame.
Dom
Smith was the only 51s hitter who had Lauer figured out Sunday and he made it a
2-2 start to his day with a 3rd inning single. Lauer added two more
strikeouts to his tally in the 3rd, one in the 4th, two
in the 5th, and reached ten strikeouts in the 6th.
The
Chihuahuas made this a 3-0 game thanks to a pair of doubles for a run in the 3rd.
Jannis finished the frame with a strikeout of Dusty Coleman and then made it
two straight K’s when he started the 4th with a strikeout of Eric
Lauer.
Jannis
yielded to Logan Taylor in the 5th and this game became a laugher.
Taylor didn’t have good control of his stuff, which led to three walks – all of
which came in the 5th – and a lot of hard hit balls for El Paso.
Javy Guerra tripled home two and Travis Jankowski doubled home three in the 5th,
and then Raffy Lopez took Taylor deep to make it 10-0 in the 6th.
With
the game seemingly out of reach – no lead is actually safe in the PCL – the 51s
put together their best scoring chance in the 7th. David Thompson
and Bryce Brentz started the frame with back-to-back singles and Las Vegas
eventually loaded the bases, but the bottom of the 51s lineup couldn’t come
through with the big hit to get on the board.
Tim
Peterson and Jamie Callahan wrapped things up on the mound for Las Vegas with a
scoreless inning apiece. Peterson struck out two and Callahan added a strikeout
of his own in the 8th. Zach Borenstein connected on the final 51s
hit when he singled in the top of the 8th.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will try to salvage a split in this series Monday afternoon
behind Drew Gagnon, who is off to a nice start in 2018.
