Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies dropped their second straight Sunday afternoon at home, and
for the second straight game it was the bullpen struggles that really did Cola
in. Former 1st round pick Anthony Kay made his long-awaited pro
debut for the Fireflies in this one, and while he was overall pretty effective,
poor pitch efficiency limited him to just four innings pitched. Still, Kay left
with a 5-2 lead and the Fireflies appeared to be in good shape to clinch a
series win in this four-game set with Augusta. However, Cola relievers Stephen
Villines and Darwin Ramos were smacked around for seven runs between the 6th
and 7th innings, which put the Green Jackets in position to earn a
series split.
The
Mets actually drafted Anthony Kay twice before he signed: in the 29th
round during the 2013 draft and then 31st overall in the 2016 draft.
Unfortunately for both sides, Kay was overworked during his final season at
UConn, which messed up his arm to the point that he required Tommy John Surgery
shortly after signing with the Mets. The surgery cost him all of 2017, which is
why this was just his first pro appearance since being drafted nearly two years
ago.
I
thought Kay’s stuff looked good but his command wasn’t great, which isn’t
surprising given the long break since he’s pitched in such a competitive
environment. He started the 1st with back-to-back strikeouts and
nearly made it three straight, but the ump didn’t give him the call on a close
pitch and Kay eventually lost that batter to a walk.
After
the promising start from Kay, the Fireflies went out and put up a three-spot in
the bottom half of the 1st. Edgardo Fermin sparked the rally with a
leadoff triple to the center field wall – his second triple of the year and
both have been hit to the center field wall. Blake Tiberi followed with an RBI
single, and just like that the Fireflies had a run before they made an out.
Matt Winaker followed with a single of his own and then Jeremy Vasquez worked a
walk to load the bases. After an unusual 7-5-4-2 double play, the Fireflies
scored their next run in an unusual fashion: Winaker came home on a wild pitch
ball four. Raphael Gladu capped the 1st inning scoring with an RBI
single to bring home Vasquez.
Kay
created his own problems in the 2nd, committing a throwing error
that led to an unearned run for Augusta.
Fermin
made it a 2-2 start to his day when he singled in the 2nd, but this
hit did not spark a Cola rally.
Kay’s
best inning was the 3rd, his only perfect frame of the game, and his
quickest by pitch count. He induced two groundouts and added a strikeout
of Manuel Geraldo to his tally.
Kay
then started the 4th with a strikeout, but ran into more trouble
after another throwing error, this time from his third baseman. Jacob Gonzalez
reached on the error, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a bloop
single, and then came home on a sac fly to make this a 3-2 game.
Columbia
responded by putting another crooked number on the board to re-take control of
this game. Dan Rizzie got the 4th inning rally started with a single
back through the middle. He advanced to second base on a Jay Jabs single and
then came around to score on Blake Tiberi’s second RBI hit of the game. Winaker
then made this a 5-2 game with his second hit of the game, knocking out Augusta
starter Jose Marte in the process. That pitching change proved to be a problem
for Columbia, as Green Jackets reliever Franklin Van Gurp retired 9 of the next
10 Cola batters while Augusta was taking control of this game.
Stephen
Villines was the first out of the Cola pen for Kay and he started his night on
a high note, working a perfect 5th with one strikeout. However, he
was sent back out for the 6th and things did not go as smoothly.
Villines allowed the first four batters to reach on three singles and a walk,
and then Rob Calabrese connected on the biggest hit of the frame, clearing the
bases with a triple to put Augusta on top 6-5.
Darwin
Ramos took over in the 7th but he couldn’t slow down the Augusta
attack. The Green Jackets stung two doubles to left against Ramos in the frame
and extended their lead to 9-5 in the process.
Conner
O’Neil came out of the Cola pen for the 8th and finally gave the
Fireflies another scoreless frame. Unfortunately, O’Neil’s outing followed the
same pattern as Villines, aka his second inning of work did not go as smoothly.
O’Neil faced seven batters in the 9th but managed to limit Augusta
to just one run in the frame.
Tiberi
and Vasquez connected on 9th inning singles for Columbia, but the
Cola bats didn’t have another rally in them this time.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will give the ball to big (6’9) Chris Viall Monday night
at 7:05 PM, as they welcome the Hagerstown Suns to town for a three-game set.
Columbia will head on the road for the first time this year starting Thursday,
when they head to Asheville.
