Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies started their 2018 season on the right foot Thursday night with
a 4-2 win over the visiting Augusta Green Jackets. Tony Dibrell, the Mets 4th
round pick from last season, made his first pro start in the opener and looked
sharp over the first four innings before running into some trouble in the 5th.
The Cola pen bailed Dibrell out in the 5th and then held on over the
final four frames. Blake Tiberi led the way offensively for Columbia, finishing
a triple shy of the cycle in his first official game back from 2017 Tommy John
Surgery.
Tony Dibrell has some interesting upside for a 4th round pick, as his fastball can get into the mid-90’s and he has a standard four-pitch mix – his slider considered his best secondary pitch coming out of the draft. His velocity was inconsistent start-to-start in college, which is why he fell to the 4th round, but he’s a big (6’3) athletic righty who could really grow within the Mets system.
Dibrell
had some control issues at times Thursday night, but he didn’t allow a hit
until the 5th inning. He showed off his athleticism coming off the
mound fielding a bunt attempt in the 1st.

Tiberi’s
big opening day started in the 1st when he slapped a one-out double
to left field. Quinn Brodey singled him home three batters later to give
Columbia a 1-0 lead, and the Fireflies never looked back.
Dibrell
struck out the side in the 2nd and then made it four straight K’s
when he got Jeffry Parra swinging to start the 3rd. Dibrell issued
his second walk of the game in the 3rd but later picked that runner
off trying to steal second base.
Tiberi
singled leading off the 3rd inning but would be stranded at third
base in the frame.
Dibrell
added another pair of strikeouts during a perfect 4th, setting a new
pro-career high of six for the night.
The
Fireflies doubled their lead in the bottom of the 4th thanks to a
pair of extra base hits. Scott Manea drilled a double to right center field,
went to third on a fly out, and then trotted home on an Edgardo Fermin triple.
Fermin won’t turn 20 until late May and is coming off a solid season split
between Kingsport and Brooklyn – his time in Brooklyn was interrupted by
multiple injuries – so he’s a prospect to keep an eye on this summer.
The
Green Jackets finally got to Dibrell for a hit in the 5th, when Orlando
Garcia laced a double to center field. The double was sandwiched by a pair of
walks, which led to a bases loaded, no outs situation for Augusta, and knocked
Dibrell out of the game. Conner O’Neil came into the dangerous situation and
did his best Houdini impersonation, escaping the jam with no damage allowed.
O’Neil got Parra to go down looking for the first out and then Malique Ziegler
lined into a 6-4 double play to end the frame.
O’Neil
stayed out for the 6th and struck out two more Green Jackets during
a perfect frame.
Stephen
Villines took over for O’Neil in the 7th, but he wasn’t able to keep
the shutout going. Villines issued a two out walk in the frame and the Green
Jackets made the most of it for a run on back-to-back singles. Neither single
was well struck, but the beautiful thing about baseball is that it’s not always
how hard you hit it, but where you hit it that matters.
The
Fireflies wasted little time getting that run back and then some by scoring two
in the bottom half of the frame. Tiberi launched a solo blast with two outs in
the frame, and then Jeremy Vasquez came through with an RBI double two batters
later to make this a 4-1 game.
Villines
found more success in the 8th, and he finished the frame with a
strikeout of Ryan Kirby.
Trey
Cobb took over for Villines in the 9th and held onto the lead for
his first save of the season. Cobb did allow an unearned run in the frame after
the leadoff batter reached on an E3 (missed catch) and the Green Jackets
singled him around to make it 4-2. Fortunately for the Cola faithful, Cobb
recovered in time to strike out Heliot Ramos and seal the deal.
These
two teams will play again Friday night at 7:05 PM, with Joe Cavallaro scheduled
to make his SAL debut opposite Garrett Cave. Cavallaro, the Mets 24th
round pick from last year’s draft, had a very strong debut season with
Kingsport in 2017, finishing with 35 K: 10 BB, a 2.34 ERA, and just 23 H
allowed over 34.2 IP split between the pen and the rotation.
