The Columbia Fireflies lost for the first time this season Saturday night, taking a 6-2 defeat from the Augusta Green Jackets at home. Cola starter Jake Simon didn’t have great command of his stuff, but he made it work, allowing just a 1^st inning run over six strong innings of work. Unfortunately for him, Green Jackets starter John Gavin was sharp as well, allowing zero runs over his 4.2 innings before yielding to the Augusta pen. In a game that became a battle of bullpens, the Cola pen struggled, and that was the difference. Cannon Chadwick and Nicolas Debora allowed a combined five runs over the final three innings, which made the mini-scoring outburst from the Fireflies offense meaningless.

Jake Simon allowed just three hits in this one, but two of them went for extra bases. The first hit he allowed was a triple off the bat of Heliot Ramos and it led to the first run of the game. Ramos came home on a sac fly from Orlando Garcia in the 1^st and Augusta never looked back.

Simon settled in nicely after the 1^st, starting his 2^nd inning with a strikeout of Jacob Gonzalez. He worked around a leadoff single in the 3^rd, worked a perfect 4^th, and then worked around a leadoff error in the 5^th. Simon upped his strikeout total with back-to-back strikeouts of Jeffry Parra and Logan Baldwin in the 5^th, and then escaped that jam with the help of a caught stealing.

The Fireflies first hit of the game was a Jeremy Vasquez single with two outs in the 4^th. Raphael Gladu led off the 5^th with a single and made it to third base, but the Fireflies couldn’t get the tying run home.

Simon finished his outing by working around a leadoff double in the 6^th. Malique Ziegler became the second Augusta baserunner to be caught trying to steal home in the game, and then Simon ended his out with a strikeout of Garcia.

Blake Tiberi started the Cola 6^th with a single, but then got thrown out trying to extend his hit into a double.

Cannon Chadwick took over for Simon in the 7^th and found himself in immediate trouble on the mound. He walked the leadoff batter and then the Green Jackets sandwiched a sac fly between two doubles to make this a 3-0 game. Chadwick would walk another batter before finally settling down and finishing the frame. He struck out Ziegler to end his long inning.

Columbia finally broke through and got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7^th. Quinn Brodey led off the frame with a walk, went to second on Gladu’s second hit of the game, and then came around to score on a Giovanny Alfonzo RBI single.

Chadwick’s 8^th inning was much shorter and he struck out two batters (Ramos and Gonzalez), but Augusta was still able to add another run on the board. Just like in the 1^st inning, a one-out triple came home on a sac fly to make this a 4-1 game.

The Fireflies scratched out another run in the bottom of the 8^th on the back of three singles. Blake Tiberi led off the frame with a single, went to second base on a groundout, and then came home on a Brodey RBI single. Gladu followed with his third hit of the game, but Brodey was caught too far off third on the play, which cut the rally short.

Nicolas Debora took over for Columbia to try and keep this a 4-2 game in the 9^th, but his SAL debut did not go smoothly after an E5 opened the door for Augusta. Debora walked the next batter and then allowed a two-out, two-run single to Ramos, which made this a 6-2 game.

Walter Rasquin added a single leading off the 9^th for Columbia, but he was erased on a game-ending double play two batters later.

The Fireflies will turn to Anthony Kay in his pro debut as they look to take the final game of this series Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM. There was no gameday for this game so I created a log for the Cola pitchers below.
