Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s let an early lead slip away in their opener with Albuquerque and
fell to 1-5 on the season Tuesday night. 51s starter Drew Gagnon was solid over
five innings of work and left with a 3-2 lead, but the Isotopes exploded for a
five-run frame as soon as he left and they never looked back. Reliever Kyle
Regnault was on the mound for the entirety of the Isotopes big 6th,
and his former B-Mets teammate Derrik Gibson provided the big hit in the frame
when he launched a three-run homerun. The 51s offense looked great in the 1st
but managed just two hits after the opening frame.
Matt
den Dekker got the 51s 1st started by drawing a walk. He came around
to score on Phil Evans second double of the season, and then Zach Borenstein
launched a two-run homer three batters later to make this a 3-0 game. Cecchini
kept the hot 1st going with his third double of the year, but he
would be thrown out trying to score on a Jose Lobaton single.
Gagnon
was called up from Binghamton earlier in the day after scheduled starter Corey
Oswalt received an unexpected promotion to the Mets. Gagnon allowed three
doubles over his five innings of work but was otherwise very effective. He
struck out three and retired all six batters he faced over the first two
innings. He added another pair of strikeouts in the 3rd, but a pair
of doubles and an RBI groundout put the Isotopes on the board. After a
scoreless 4th, Gagnon allowed a double and a two-out RBI single in
the 5th, which made this a 3-2 game.

Kyle
Regnault took over to start the 6th and just didn’t have it in this
one. He allowed four singles, a double, and the three-run bomb to Gibson as the
Isotopes jumped ahead 7-3. It might’ve been worse if not for a strong throw
from den Dekker to gun down Tom Murphy trying to stretch his hit into a triple.
Borenstein
led off the 7th with a single and Evans reached on an infield single
in the 8th, but neither threat led to any runs for Las Vegas.
Logan
Taylor finished things off on the mound for Las Vegas with two scoreless
innings. He ran into some trouble in the 8th – runners on second and
third with no outs – but he settled down and struck out three of the next four
batters (he intentionally walked the other) to escape the threat.
Looking
ahead, the 51s will try to find a way to win again Wednesday night in game two
of this series. A.J. Griffin – who signed with the Mets during spring training –
will make his organizational debut for Las Vegas, and first pitch is scheduled
for 8:35 PM.
