Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies beat Hickory 6-3 at home Friday night to even their four
game series with the Crawdads. Cola starter Joe Cavallaro turned in his third
straight strong outing to start the season, striking out six and limited the
Crawdads to just two hits and two walks over the first six innings Friday. The
Fireflies offense stayed hot with another on base party, as everyone in the
lineup reached base at least once, which is something they did multiple times
in Greenville.
Cavallaro
worked around a catcher’s interference in the 1st, then tossed a
perfect frame in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th
innings, and faced the minimum in the 6th, so it was only the 3rd
inning that gave him problems. He struck out Sam Huff in the 1st
after the catcher’s interference kept the inning alive.
Quinn
Brodey led off with a walk during the Fireflies big 2nd inning, but
he was caught trying to steal second in the frame. Ali Sanchez then worked a
walk two batters later, which sparked a little two out rally. Sanchez advanced
to second on a Raphael Gladu single and then Walter Rasquin doubled them both
home. Edgardo Fermin followed with his fourth double of the year to make it
3-0.
Cavallaro’s
rough 3rd inning started with back-to-back walks issued on nine
pitches. Eric Jenkins followed with a single to left that loaded the bases with
nobody out. Cavallaro responded with a strikeout of Miguel Aparacia, but then
an E5 fielding error opened the door for the Crawdads first run. A second run
came home from Hickory on the next play – a groundout – and then Cavallaro
ended the threat with a strikeout of Ryan Dorow.
Cavallaro
faced the minimum over his final three innings of work, striking out three,
inducing four weak groundouts, and finishing his night after a 4-3 double play
in the 6th.
Ali
Sanchez’s second hit was a 4th inning single. The Fireflies then
added a run in the 5th on back-to-back doubles from Matt Winaker
(his second) and Jeremy Vasquez (his fourth).
After
Cavallaro walked off in the 6th, the Fireflies went out on got two
more insurance runs for the bullpen to work with in the bottom half of the
frame. Raphael Gladu started the rally with a walk, went to second on a Rasquin
single, up to third on a Hickory error, and then came home on a Blake Tiberi
single. Matt Winaker followed with a sac fly to push the Cola lead to 6-2.
Joshua
Payne took over on the hill for the Fireflies in the 7th and struck
out two during a perfect frame.
Rigoberto
Terrazas tied a Fireflies record when he singled in the 7th to push
his hit streak to 11-straight games – David Thompson set the record during the
Fireflies inaugural season.
Payne
stayed out for the 8th and added three more strikeouts to his tally,
but it wasn’t a perfect frame. He allowed a double to Aparicio and then Melvin
Novoa singled him home to make it a 6-3 game.
Stephen
Villines wrapped things up on the hill for Columbia with a perfect 9th,
striking out Chad Smith to make it a 12-K night from the Cola pitching staff.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will look to gain an edge in this series behind Jake Simon
on Saturday. As an aside, since there was no gameday log for this game, I put together an unofficial one that you can refer to below.
