Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies finally got on the field after two straight rainouts
and took the first game of their series in New Hampshire 4-3 over the Fisher
Cats. The Fisher Cats have two of the top prospects in infielders Bo Bichette
and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., so the Ponies staff will have their hands full this
series. Marcos Molina and four relievers took care of business against those
two in game one, holding them to 1-9 with a walk, an RBI and 3 strikeouts, and
retiring them in some key situations. Meanwhile, the Ponies hit three go-ahead
solo blasts to drive their offense, with the last lead finally sticking.
Andrew
Ely started the game with a single for Binghamton.
Jeff
McNeil hit the first go-ahead solo blast in the top of the 2nd.
The
Fisher Cats threatened to get that run back in the bottom of the 2nd,
with two singles and a walk, but Patrick Mazeika caught Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
trying to steal third between the two hits, which kept this a 1-0 game.
Peter
Alonso’s first hit of the night was an infield single in the 3rd.
The
Cats did get that run back in the bottom of the 3rd after Juan Kelly
started the frame with a double. Kelly went to third on a groundout and came
home on an RBI single from Bichette.
The
Ponies jumped right back on top in the 4th when Matt Oberste
launched his first home of the year. Jhoan Urena followed with a single, but
the Ponies couldn’t manufacture a second run in the frame.
Both
of Molina’s strikeouts came in the 4th inning, but things did not go
well in between the K’s. Cavan Biggio tripled and came home on an RBI single
from Andrew Guillotte.
Champ
Stuart worked a walk leading off the 5th, advanced twice on wild
pitches, and then came home on an Alonso RBI single. Patrick Mazeika followed with a
double, but the Ponies couldn’t add on further.
Adonis
Uceta took over for Molina in the 5th and started the frame with a
walk of Bichette. Bo stole second, went to third on a groundout, and then came
home on a Max Pentecost RBI triple. Uceta struck out two in the 5th
and then added another during a perfect 6th.
Tim
Tebow hit the first of his two doubles in the top of the 6th and his
second double in the 9th.
Austin
McGeorge came out of the pen for Binghamton in the 7th and struck
out Bo Bichette and Vladito back-to-back during a perfect frame.
The
Ponies jumped ahead for good in the 8th thanks to Jeff McNeil, who
hit his second homer of the game. He has three hits this year and they’re all
dingers!
McGeorge,
Daniel Zamora, and Tyler Bashlor split the 8th, with Bashlor getting
the final out. He stayed on in the 9th and worked around a leadoff
double from Juan Kelly. Bashlor struck out Bichette with 95+ MPH heat and then
ended the game by getting Vladito to line out to left.
Looking
ahead, the Ponies have a chance to get back to .500 with Joe Shaw (0-1, 6.00
ERA) on the mound Tuesday night – first pitch at 6:35 PM.
