Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies took a 5-2 loss in their rubber-match with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Thursday afternoon to fall to 4-7 in 2018. Ponies starter Andrew Church did a commendable job against a tough Eastern League lineup, but the Ponies offense stayed quiet in New Hampshire. Entering the series, the focus for Binghamton was on the big boppers at the top of the Cats lineup, but it was the New Hampshire pitching that had a bigger impact. Every game was close, but Binghamton managed to score just 10 runs over the three games series, so it was tough to win even if the Ponies pitchers were holding Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. mostly in check – they combined to go 5-20. Fisher Cats starter Jordan Romano was in control from the get go in this one, and he outdueled Church over seven innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
Andrew Church needed just 80 pitches for 7 strong innings of work, which is exactly the type of low pitch count outing he’s proven capable of turning in when everything’s going right. He’s not out there looking for swings-and-misses, he’s looking for early contact and relying on the defense behind him to convert batted balls into outs. His own defense failed him in the 1st, as an errant pickoff throw allowed Andrew Guillotte to advance from first to third base with nobody out. Guillotte had started the frame with a single and then came home on a sac fly shortly after the error.

Nice catch from Mora to end the 1st

Church bounced back with a scoreless 2nd and a perfect 3rd inning, striking out two during those two frames.

Cats starter Jordan Romano didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the 4th, but that hit allowed Binghamton to tie things up because it came after a HBP and a walk. Matt Oberste singled home Peter Alonso to make it a 1-1 game.

That tie didn’t last long, as the bottom of the 4th proved to be a difficult one for Church. He allowed a leadoff single to Vladito, and then two more singles from the Fisher Cats brought him home to give New Hampshire the lead again. A second run came home later in the frame on a fielder’s choice groundout. Five of the six New Hampshire batters to come to the plate in the frame hit the ball on the ground, but the Cats made it work for two runs.

Tyler Moore hit his first double of the year in the 5th and the Ponies loaded the bases with two outs, but they couldn’t respond with any runs. Romano got arguably the most important out of the game when Peter Alonso flied out to RF to end the threat.

Moore

After his tough 4th, Church bounced back to face the minimum over the next two innings. He struck out two in the 5th and a double play helped him erase a Vladito single in the 6th. Church stayed out for the 7th and worked around a pair of baserunners for one more scoreless inning.

5-4-3 double play

Eric Hanhold took over for Church in the 8th and ran into some troubles against the heart of the Cats lineup. He allowed a double to Cavan Biggio and then a long homer to Lourdes Gurriel Jr., as the Cats extended their lead to 5-1.

Gurriel

Jeff McNeil started the 9th with a double as the Ponies tried to rally back, but they had just one run in their bats. Kevin Taylor singled McNeil to third two batters later and then McNeil came home on a Tim Tebow groundout to make it 5-2.

Looking ahead, the Ponies return home Friday to start a weekend series with the Erie Sea Wolves (5-8). Nabil Crismatt (1-1, 1.74 ERA) is scheduled to start for Binghamton as they look to get a winning streak going so they can get back to .500.
