Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies rode a great start from lefty Anthony Kay to a 5-0 win
Sunday afternoon in South Carolina, which forced a series split with the
Hickory Crawdads. Kay allowed just three singles over six scoreless to lower
his ERA to a paltry 1.69 and earn his first professional win. Cola relievers
Carlos Hernandez and Trey Cobb then combined to face the minimum over the final
three innings as they held on to the first Fireflies shutout of 2018. After a
quiet game Saturday, the Cola offense was at it again Sunday, with all but one
batter reaching base for the Fireflies, and that batter (Quinn Brodey) had an
RBI to help the cause anyway.
Now
that Anthony Kay is finally healthy and on the mound again, he’s suddenly
getting a lot of attention again. Baseball
America had a great piece on Kay that was posted after his last start, and then
he made the Baseball
Prospectus ten pack after this start. He’s sitting low-90’s with his heater
early in the season, topping out around 95/96 MPH, and he’s starting to mix in
his changeup and slider more often as he gets comfortable out there. He
probably has enough to be pitching in the Florida State League as is, but if he
gets those pitches working there will be no reason for him to stay with
Columbia.
Kay
worked around a single in each of the first two frames and then finished the 2nd
inning with a strikeout of Justin Jacobs.
Meanwhile,
the Fireflies gave Kay an early lead to work with when they scored twice in the
bottom of the 1st. Blake Tiberi reached on an infield single and
then came around to score on Matt Winaker’s first triple of the year. Winaker
came home on a Jeremy Vasquez RBI groundout and just like that it was a 2-0
game. Also shown is Edgardo Fermin's infield single.
Starting
with that strikeout of Jacobs, Kay put together a streak of seven straight
retired, adding a strikeout of Eric Jenkins in the 3rd and then
Melvin Novoa in the 4th.
Jeremy
Vasquez worked a leadoff walk for Columbia in the 4th as they added
onto their lead. Rigo Terrazas replaced Vasquez on the bases after a fielder’s
choice, went to third on an Ali Sanchez single, and then came home on a Raphael
Gladu single.
Kay
allowed two base runners in the 5th, but they weren’t on the bases
at the same time because Kay picked the first runner off. He then finished his
outing with a perfect 6th, striking out Jenkins and Miguel Aparacio
in the frame to push his total to five.
Rigo
started the Cola 6th with a single, went to third on Sanchez’ first
double of the year, and then came home on a Scott Manea RBI single to make this
a 4-0 game.
Carlos
Hernandez took over for Kay in the 7th and struck out three over two
perfect frames. Hernandez has been lights out since joining the Cola pen, with
14 K: 2 BB and just one hit allowed over his first 6 appearances (8 IP total).
The
Fireflies added one more run in the bottom of the 7th, and they did
so without the aid of a hit. Tiberi, Winaker, and Vasquez (all in the SAL
top-10 for walks drawn) worked back-to-back-to-back walks to start the inning,
and then Tiberi came home on a groundout to make it 5-0. Scott Manea connected
on the final Cola hit when he singled in the 8th.
Trey
Cobb wrapped things up on the mound for Columbia with a perfect 9th
to seal the win and improve the Fireflies record to 11-6. Cobb started the
frame with a strikeout of Eric Jenkins and then induced back-to-back groundouts
to end it.
Looking
ahead, the Fireflies will travel across the state to face off against the rival
Charleston River Dogs – who are affiliated with the Mets cross town rivals, the
Yankees.
